
Varsity Eight Advances to Grand Final at IRA Championship

For the third-straight year the Syracuse Varsity 8 will race for the National Title at the IRA Championship. The fifth-ranked Orange placed third in Saturday's Semifinal B to advance to the Grand Final Sunday on Mercer Lake at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J.
The Orange Second Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight will race in the Petite Final Sunday morning. The Varsity Four completed competition on Saturday with a second-place finish in the C Final earning 14th overall among the Varsity Fours.
The V8 placed third in the second semifinal to earn a spot in the Grand Final behind Princeton (6:04.737) and Yale (+2.474). The Orange finished the 2,000-meter race in a heavy headwind in 6:09.521 and used a strong final 750 meters to open its lead on Brown (+7.436) who placed fourth. Stanford (6:16.389) and Cornell (6:33.139) rounded out the race and advance to Sunday's Petite Final.
The Varsity 8 Grand Final is set for 10:08 a.m. Sunday. The Orange will be in Lane 7 and will line up with Northeastern (Lane 2), Yale (Lane 3), California (Lane 4), Princeton (Lane 5) and Washington (Lane 6).
In the 2V8 Semifinal A race, Syracuse placed fourth to advance to the Petite Final on Sunday. The headwind picked up just before the start and had gusts of 10 MPH during the race. Cal won crossing the finish in 6:16:962 while Yale (+3.840) was second and Brown (+7.962) was third. Syracuse will be joined in the Petite Final by Cornell and Pennsylvania on Sunday.
The Orange will have a favorable Lane assignment for the Petite Final in Lane 5 and will be next to Princeton in Lane 4. Boston University (Lane 2), Cornell (Lane 3), Northeastern (Lane 6) and Penn (Lane 7) make up the field. Start time for the 2V8 Petite Final is 9:20 a.m.
Syracuse also placed fourth in the 3V8 Semifinal A race to advance to the Petite Final. Harvard won crossing the finish line in 6:33.312 while Brown (+3.098) and Dartmouth (+10.024) placed second and third to earn the final two spots in the Grand Final. The Orange were ahead of Northeastern and Penn who will also race in the Petite Final Sunday.
Sunday's 3V8 Petite Final is set for an 8:56 a.m. start. Navy (Lane 2), Northeastern (Lane 3), Princeton (Lane 4), Boston U (Lane 6) and Penn (Lane 7) will race the Orange who will, like the 2V8, start in Lane 5.
After the semifinals for the Varsity Four were canceled Saturday due to weather, the Orange were placed in the C Final based on the time trials from Saturday morning. The Orange earned a second-place finish behind Boston U (7:10.085). Syracuse closed in on the Terriers in the final 500m after the two exchanged the lead through the middle thousand but were unable to overcome the late lead taken by BU and finished 2.294 seconds behind. Oklahoma City placed third while Princeton, Drexel and Colgate rounded out the order of finish.
The Varsity Four finished 14th overall at the 2023 IRA National Championship and earned the ninth-best time of all teams competing in Saturday's V4+ Finals.
