Coughlin Named Hall of Fame Semifinalist

Syracuse alum and two-time Super Bowl-winning coach Tom Coughlin is a semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame!
Coughlin is in the coach/contributors category, where he is one-of-29 semifinalists that were selected by the Hall of Fame's 12-person committee. Those 29 semifinalists will be whittled down to 12 through the next stage, with the results to be announced on July 24.
This is done separately than the modern-era process, which 'Cuse legend Dwight Freeney was a finalist for in 2023. Coach/contributors and seniors are selected via a committee.
Coughlin was a three-year letterman for legendary coach Ben Schwartzwalder and a wingback who played alongside of All-American backs Larry Csonka and Floyd Little – both of whom are already in the hall of fame. As a senior, Tom broke SU's single-season pass receiving record which had stood since the 50s. An excellent student, he won the Orange Key Award as SU's most outstanding scholar-athlete and the Joseph Alexander Award for excellence in football, scholarship and citizenship.
In February 1994, Tom was officially announced as the head coach of the 30th franchise in the National Football League, the Jacksonville Jaguars. In his stint with the expansion club, he led the team to two AFC Championship games. He later went on to lead the New York Giants, bringing home a pair of Lombardi Trophies for Super Bowl XLII and XLVI. He has an overall NFL coaching record of 182-157 in 20 seasons.
If either Coughlin or Freeney are selected in 2024, the next honoree would move Syracuse into a tie for fifth among colleges for most selections with nine.
