Two Syracuse football standouts are up for national player of the year accolades.
Quarterback Garrett Shrader and tight end Oronde Gadsden II both made the cut for the initial Maxwell Award Watch List. The award, presented to the most outstanding player in college football, released an 85-player watch list. 'Cuse is one-of-16 schools with multiple players selected.
Shrader, already voted a team captain for the second year in a row, enters the 2023 season as one-of-five active FBS quarterbacks that have amassed 5,000+ passing and 1,500+ rushing yards in their career. Despite less than two seasons of starting at SU, he already is in the top-10 in program history in completions (10th), passing yards (ninth), passing efficiency (fourth) completion percentage (fifth), passing yards per game (fifth) and attempt (fourth) and touchdown passes (eighth). He also is second in rushing touchdowns by a quarterback at Syracuse and is tied for 13th in ACC history in the category. Shrader was added as a midseason addition to the Maxwell Award Watch List last October.
Gadsden posted one of the most prolific seasons by a sophomore pass catcher in program history last year. In addition to leading all tight ends nationally in receiving yards, he set SU records for most receptions by a sophomore, most receptions by a tight end and most receiving yards by a tight end. The 2022 First Team All-ACC selection was a Biletnikoff Award Watch List addition last season.
The Maxwell Football Club has once again partnered with Pro Football Focus (PFF) and Phil Steele Publications as selection committee partners. PFF provides detailed metrics and performance-based assessments to selection committee staff, with several senior PFF analysts are members of our selection committee. Phil Steele's College Football Preview is generally recognized as the most complete preseason magazine.
