SYRACUSE, N.Y. – #1 Syracuse opens the 2023 campaign against former BIG EAST foe Providence on Thursday, Aug. 24 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. Admission to the match is free.
The team will unveil the 2022 ACC and NCAA championship banners in a pregame ceremony that will begin at approximately 6:50 p.m.

'Cuse Update
Syracuse won all three of its exhibition contests, earning a clean sheet throughout preseason play. The Orange outscored their opponents, 13-0, over the course of exhibition play with different players scoring multiple goals in each contest.

Senior Lorenzo Boselli recorded a hat trick in the opening game against Canisius, while Nicholas Kaloukian and Jeorgio Kocevski found the back of the net twice versus St. Bonaventure and Marist, respectively.

Syracuse lost 15 members of the 2022 College Cup squad, including nine players who competed in the championship game. Leading scorers Nathan Opoku and Levonte Johnson are playing professionally. Opoku signed a deal with Leicester City in the Premier League, while Johnson was drafted by the Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

No. 1 in the Polls
After winning its first National Championship in 2022, 'Cuse begins the campaign as the top ranked team in both the United Soccer Coaches Poll and Top Drawer Soccer. This marks the team's highest ranking since the Orange were No. 2 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll on Sept. 20, 2016.

Scouting the Friars
Head coach Craig Stewart is entering his 12th season at the helm of Providence's men's soccer program. The 2022 Friar squad finished the year 5-5-7. Graduate Luis Garcia and senior Gevork Diarbian were both named to the All-BIG EAST Team. Diarbian paced the team last season with four goals and five assists.

Series History
Thursday's match will mark the 27th all-time meeting between Syracuse and Providence and first since the Orange joined the Atlantic Coast Conference. Syracuse holds a 15-11 advantage in the series. The Friars last visited Central New York on Sept. 26, 2008 when the Orange upset the then-ranked #22 Providence squad 3-0. At home, 'Cuse holds a 9-3 record against Providence, outscoring the Friars 24-6. The Orange recorded a clean sheet in all nine victories in Syracuse, N.Y.
