How it Happened
- The eight-ranked Orange (1-0) wasted little time scoring as junior transfer Aiden Drabick poked home the first goal of the season on a deflected cross from fellow newcomer Pieke van de Pas in the sixth minute.
- Bell knocked home her first goal since the 2021 season, converting a rebound in the 12th minute for a 2-0 Syracuse lead, which held up through the balance of the first quarter.
- Sacred Heart (0-2) pulled back within one of the Orange as Jaden Ray connected on a pass from Ally Frampton.
- De Vries gave 'Cuse another two goal lead with 72 seconds left in the first half, capitalizing on a quick restart pass from Eefke van den Nieuwenhof. Syracuse took its 3-1 lead into the break.
- Out of halftime, freshman Sarah Smalley pushed home her first career collegiate goal in the 32nd minute on a tip pass from de Vries for a 4-1 'Cuse advantage.
- Bell recorded her first career multi-goal game in the 45th minute as sophomore Lieke Leeggangers tipped another pass towards Bell for the conversion.
- Van de Pas got in on the goal scoring as well, going solo from the top of the arc into the heart of the Pioneer defense and lifting a shot over the out-stretched arms of netminder Samantha Maresca in the 54th minute.
- Syracuse starts out with a 1-0 record for a third-straight season.
- Van de Pas put up the first three points of her Syracuse career with a goal and an assist. De Vries equaled the mark on the afternoon to surpass the 100-career point mark after entering 2023 with 99.
- Bell converted her first goal since Oct. 31, 2021 against Cornell. It marks her first multi-goal game since joining the program that season.
- Brooke Borzymowski finished 45 minutes of work with two saves as Sacred Heart managed three total shots. Abby Neitch, making her career debut as a sophomore, finished the final 15 minutes of the game.
- Maresca was under duress throughout the game, seeing 21 total shots on goal, making 14 saves in the effort. She was backed by Lizzie Mendrzycki with a defensive save as well. The Orange took 31 total shots in the game, putting 21 chances on cage.
- Farquhar won her first game as the head coach of Syracuse University field hockey, joining the program's previous three coaches, Muriel K. Smith, Kathleen Parker, and Ange Bradley, in winning their Orange debuts.
- It's a quick turnaround for Syracuse as the Orange return to Moulton Winder Field on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game against Vermont, which hosted the three-game round robin this weekend.
- Sunday's contest will be carried on AmericaEast.tv free of charge.
