Team 51 for Syracuse field hockey is set to begin this weekend. Newly-minted head coach Lynn Farquhar and the Orange head to Burlington, Vermont for a pair of games at Moulton Winder Field, taking on Sacred Heart on Saturday before meeting host Vermont on Sunday.
From the Start
- It's a fresh start for the Syracuse field hockey team, which reached the NCAA Quarterfinals for a second-straight season, the only team in the ACC to manage that feat.
- A new era begins on Saturday in Burlington, Vermont as Lynn Farquhar takes over the program from her predecessor, Ange Bradley.
- Plenty of fresh faces adorn the 2023 roster, with 10 new additions to the squad, from incoming freshmen to transfers to graduate students.
- Two new assistant coaches join Farquhar on the sidelines: Sam Brown and Emma Russell '16, who played on the 2015 NCAA Division I National Championship team.
- Familiar foes open the 2023 slate as the Orange meet Sacred Heart and Vermont to begin the season for a third-straight campaign. 'Cuse hosted the pair to open 2021, followed by Sacred Heart's turn last year in Connecticut. This season, the Catamounts return the favor with the openers.
In the National Rankings
- The Orange pop open the new season inside the top 10 of the NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, grabbing 589 points and the number eight spot.
- Neither of this weekend's opponents were ranked in the top 20 of the preseason count.
- All seven ACC programs were among the top 20 teams: No. 1 North Carolina, No. 6 Virginia, No. 8 Syracuse, No. 9 Louisville, No. 12 Wake Forest, No. 17 Boston College, and No. 20 Duke.
- Ten of the 17 regular season opponents - and both exhibition teams (Maryland, Rutgers) - appear in the preseason poll. In addition to the ACC, Syracuse will clash with preseason No. 5 Penn State, No. 10 Princeton, No. 13 Harvard, and No. 15 UConn.
Welcome Back, Coach(es)!
- Central New York is not an unfamiliar locale for new head coach Lynn Farquhar, who returns to the Hill, this time in the driver's seat.
- Farquhar was an assistant coach for the Orange for four seasons (2007-10), helping lay the groundwork for the program's eventual national championship.
- During her previous stint at J.S. Coyne Stadium, Farquhar helped recruit and mentor the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, more than a dozen All-America selections and 2012 Olympian Shannon Taylor.
- Farquhar spent eight seasons as the head coach at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, building the Hawks into an Atlantic 10 power over that time.
- A national champion as a player, Farquhar helped Old Dominion University hoist the trophy during the 2000 season.
- Not the only NCAA Division I National Champion on staff, Farquhar tapped Emma Russell '16 as an assistant coach.
- Russell helped lead the Orange to the title during the 2015 season, the first Syracuse women's team to win a national championship. Russell book-ended the 4-2 Championship Game win with a goal in the ninth minute before assisting on an insurance goal in the 64th minute.
Return to the Green Mountains
- It's been awhile since the Orange hit the Green Mountains for a contest.
- Syracuse returns to Burlington, Vermont for the first time since the 2019 campaign.
- Saturday's game against Sacred Heart is the first time Syracuse plays a game in the Green Mountain State since knocking off Vermont 4-3 in overtime on Aug. 30, 2019.Â
- Then-rookie, now-graduate student Charlotte de Vries punched home the game-winning goal in the 66th minute, her second of the game in the come-from-behind victory. Those two goals were the first goals of her storied career.
- Syracuse is 4-2 all-time against Vermont when playing in Burlington and has never faced Sacred Heart in the Green Mountain State.
