Syracuse (3-0) collected its first home win of the 2023 campaign and the first at Coyne for head coach Lynn Farquhar. Charlotte de Vries and Pieke van de Pas each chipped in two goals and an assist, with Hattie Madden knocking in a goal in her Coyne debut as well.
How it Happened
- One of the fastest offenses in the ACC, Syracuse struck in the first minute as van de Pas took a direct insert from Willemijn Boogert corner just 43 seconds into the home opener.
- Ten minutes later, the Orange doubled the lead out to 2-0 as freshman Hattie Madden tipped in a cross from classmate Amber Coebergh in the 12th minute. The play started deep in the Orange defensive third with co-captain Eefke van den Nieuwenhof sailing an outlet pass up to the midfield for a transition strike by Hattie Madden.
- Monmouth trimmed the 'Cuse lead to one in the 20th minute as Sofia Fouces collected a long pass from Jess Tucker.
- Three minutes later, van de Pas pushed the lead back to two as de vries slid a pass up ahead to a waiting van de Pas who finished a backhander past Monmouth's Jesse Eiselin.
- Out of the halftime break, de Vries added an insurance goal two minutes in as van de Pas returned the assist. The latter raced ahead and dropped a pass backwards to de Vries, who charged through the Monmouth defense, going bar down for a 4-1 lead, the second quick-strike goal of the day for the Orange.
- Late in the third, with 50 seconds showing on the clock, de Vries iced the game with another nifty backhand finish. Freshman Sarah Smalley spun around her defender and found de Vries on the Monmouth doorstep, setting up a big backhand swing from three yards out.
Behind the Numbers
- The Orange out-shot the Hawks 17-2. Syracuse scored on its first two shots of the game to take an early lead.
- Van de Pas brought her season points total to 16 on six goals and four assists.
- De Vries moved into sole possession of fourth on the 'Cuse all-time goal scoring list with her 42nd and 43rd career goals, surpassing Yvonne Milionis (1988-91). De Vries is now just one goal adrift of Roos Weers (2015-18), who notched 44 in her Orange career.
- De Vries now carries 107 career points (43g, 21a) and is three behind Weers and Leonie Geyer (2010-13) for fifth all-time at 110 career points.
- Brooke Borzymowski made one stop in her third-straight win. Her counterpart, Eiselin, made eight saves against one of the top shooting teams in the country.
