ACC play opens this week for sixth-ranked Syracuse as the Orange head to Durham, North Carolina for a top-10 battle against No. 9 Duke. On Sunday, Syracuse returns home to J.S. Coyne Stadium for a noon battle against in-state foe Wagner in the first meeting between programs.
From the Start
- It's ACC time for the Syracuse University field hockey team as the Orange head south for their league opener at No. 9 Duke Friday night at 6 p.m.
- 'Cuse returns to J.S. Coyne Stadium on Sunday for an in-state tilt with Wagner at Noon.
- Both games will be on ACC Network Extra.
- Syracuse went 2-0 last week, besting Cornell on Wednesday and topping UConn at Coyne on Sunday. Friday night's game at Lafayette was canceled with heavy storms and lightning in the greater Easton area.
- Head coach Lynn Farquhar has the Orange out to a 5-0 start, tied for the best start in a 'Cuse head coach's tenure. She is level with Ange Bradley, who opened her Syracuse career at 5-0 as well, joined by Farquhar on the sidelines as an assistant coach.
In the National Rankings
- Another week, another bump in the national polls for the Orange as Syracuse elevated one spot to sixth this week in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.
- Syracuse collected 568 points, tied with Virginia for the number six spot this week. The Orange earned one first-place vote as well.
- Elevating to sixth marks the highest ranking for Syracuse since earning a similar rank on Oct. 19, 2021. It is the first time Syracuse earned a first-place vote during the regular since Nov. 2, 2021.
- The ACC was assured a top-10 battle this weekend as Duke was slotted ninth in the polls heading into Friday's showdown. Syracuse and Duke have met at least once as ranked opponents every year since the Orange joined the ACC in 2013.
- All seven ACC teams were ranked once again this week: No. 2 North Carolina, No. 4 Louisville, No. 6 Syracuse, No. 6 Virginia, No. 9 Duke, No. 14 Boston College, and No. 16 Wake Forest.
Farquhar vs. Ranked Opponents
- Friday night in Durham will be the first time Syracuse head coach Lynn Farquhar takes on a ranked opponent at the helm of the Orange.
- But it won't be the first time she has coached against a team ranked by the NFHCA, nor a ranked Duke team.
- During her tenure at Saint Joseph's (2014-21), Farquhar went 12-21, getting off to a slow start with the Hawks at 0-6 through her first three years.
- But over the course of her final five campaigns on Hawk Hill, Farquhar went 12-15, collecting a 3-2 win over No. 4 North Carolina along the way.Â
- Of those 15 losses, five were in overtime. In her final season (2021) with Saint Joseph's, Farquhar went 4-5.
- In her role as an assistant coach with Syracuse from 2007-10, Syracuse went 29-13 against ranked opponents.
