SPARKS, Md. – In advance of the 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships, three Syracuse men's lacrosse players were named to the 66-man player pool for the USA Lacrosse Men's Box National Team.
Head coach Regy Thorpe, an All-American at Syracuse as well, announced the 50 players on Tuesday. Former Orange Joel White and Cole Kirst were named, in addition to current sophomore Joey Spallina.
Players in the pool converge on Utica, New York this weekend for training camp before returning at the end of the month for the North American Invitational Sept. 29-30. The 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships are set to run from Sept. 20-29, 202 in Utica at the Utica University Nexus Center and the Adirondack Back Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
A five-time All-Star in professional field lacrosse, White, a 2011 Syracuse graduate, was a member of the USA Lacrosse box team that claimed bronze at the 2019 championships. He was a member of two NCAA Division I Championships, and has been part of two Team USA gold medal teams.
Kirst, who recently earned his masters degree from Syracuse, makes his box debut with USA Lacrosse in the player pool. He backed USA Lacrosse to gold at last summer's Under-21 world championship. The Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) Team of the Year, Kirst was drafted 55th overall in the third round of the 2022 National Lacrosse League (NLL) Entry Draft.
After spending the summer in the Ontario Junior Lacrosse League (OJLL) with the Orangeville Northmen, Spallina will join USA Lacrosse in the player pool. The 2023 ACC Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Year, Spallina led the Orange in scoring as a freshman and turned in one of the most prolific scoring campaigns by a Syracuse freshman in program history.
