How it Happened
- Syracuse's offense put early pressure on the Virginia backline, getting the first corner and shots of the game in the fourth minute.
- After the midway point of the first quarter, Virginia applied the pressure with back-to-back corners that led to three shots. Borzymowski stopped the second shot, but the rebound fell to Mendez-Trendler for the first tally of the day.
- Three minutes into the second period, Virginia struck again on another pair of quick shots, both stopped by Borzymowski, but Janssen was waiting on the backpost for the pass by Boterman for a 2-0 Virginia lead.
- Down but not out, the Orange cut the deficit in half as Drabick drove the baseline and slipped a pass in for a Bell one-timer right in front of the Virginia goal, sending things to the break with a 2-1 deficit.
- Out of halftime, Syracuse cranked up the pressure on Virginia again, out-shooting the Cavaliers 6-1 in the third. Tyler Kennedy made three saves in the third against Syracuse, however.
- In the 49th minute, van de Pas put together an individual effort, splitting between several UVa defenders before launching a back-handed rocket with a bar-down goal and deadlocking the ACC game at 2-2.
- In the first overtime, Syracuse got the first crack with a corner in the 63rd minute, but the ensuing shot was blocked. Five minutes later, Borzymowski turned aside a Virginia shot to preserve the 2-2 score after the first 10-minute overtime.
- Less than a minute into overtime, Borzymowski again made a save to extend the contest, knocking a potential winner away with her blocker.
- The Orange had a chance in the 76th minute on a corner, but the shot was thwarted by Kennedy.
- Late in the overtime, Syracuse played down after a green card. Virginia took a penalty corner with 33 seconds left but Iacobussi tipped home the game-winner six seconds later.
- Virginia controlled the rate of play in the first half, out-shooting the orange 11-4 through 30 minutes. But the Orange returned that number in kind for the second half, taking a dozen attempts while Virginia was afforded just three. The Cavaliers out-shot Syracuse 3-2 across the two overtime periods.
- The Orange earned 13 penalty corners while the Cavaliers had nine. The three UVa goals were in the second and third attempts of three of those corners.
- Borzymowski made nine saves, her season-best to date. Counterpart Tyler Kennedy stopped seven shots.
- The loss ended Syracuse's 13-game home winning streak, which led Division I entering this weekend. Virginia extended its win streak over the Orange to 10 straight.
- The Orange head for Happy Valley for another top-20 battle on Sunday.
- No. 10 Syracuse meets No. 16 Penn State for a noon game at Penn State Field Hockey Complex. BTN+ will carry the game. Sunday marks the first time since 2007 the Orange and the Nittany Lions clash during the regular season. The teams have not played in University Park, Pennsylvania since the 2012 postseason.
