Orange Continue Road Swing at UVA and at #8 Pitt

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team is set to continue its road swing in Charlottesville, Va. and Pittsburgh, Pa. for two conference matchups. The Orange (2-10, 0-2 ACC) will play Virginia (7-5, 0-2 ACC) on Friday, September 29 at 7 p.m., then will travel to Pittsburgh to play the No. 8 Panthers (11-2, 2-0 ACC) on Sunday, October 1 at 1 p.m. Fans can watch both matches which will be streamed on ACCNX through the ESPN app.

'Cuse is 11-3 all-time versus Virginia, having won each annual matchup since Syracuse joined the ACC in 2013. The two teams met for the first time on Nov. 3, 1990, where the Orange swept the Cavaliers. Last season, 'Cuse took the match in four sets on Nov. 6, 2022. Virginia is looking to rebound from a two-loss start in ACC play, after being swept by North Carolina and Duke last week. The Cavaliers finished the 2022 season 12-17 overall and 4-14 in ACC play.

The Orange will be meeting the Panthers for the 56th time and are 11-44 all-time against Pitt. The first meeting between the two resulted in a 2-1 Pitt win, on Oct. 8, 1982. 'Cuse is looking to beat the Panthers for the first time since Sept. 26, 2020, where it defeated Pitt in straight sets. The Panthers are looking to continue their five-game winning streak, defeating Duke and North Carolina in their first conference matchups of the season. Pittsburgh finished the 2022 season atop the ACC as co-champions with Louisville. They ended the season with a 31-4 record and went 17-1 in conference play, ultimately closing out the campaign with an NCAA semifinal loss to Louisville. The Panthers were selected to finish second to the Cardinals in the 2023 ACC Coaches Preseason Poll, with 189 points and seven first-place votes.

'Cuse is looking to bounce back after being swept twice to start ACC play versus #5 Louisville and Notre Dame. Junior Cherlin Antonio had a career-high 19 kills in the loss to the Fighting Irish, placing her fifth in the ACC in kills and ninth in points. With an average of five kills per set in ACC matchups, Antonio ranks second in the conference. The Orange had their best hitting percentage in a single set this season against Notre Dame, achieving a percentage of .394 in the first set. Freshman Mira Ledermueller had 26 assists in the match. She leads the team with 222 on the season.

After this weekend, the Orange will return home for Alumni Weekend to play Virginia Tech on Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. and Wake Forest on Oct. 8 at noon. There will be a social event for 'Cuse Volleyball alumni on Saturday, Oct. 7.
