'Cuse Sweeps Post to Open Season

The Orange swept their season-opening series at Post with a 3-2 win on Saturday at the Connecticut Sports Center. Sophomore Mik Todd and freshman Nea Tervonen gave Syracuse (2-0 overall) a 2-0 lead in the first two periods and freshman Haley Trudeau scored the game-winner in the third.

"Post battled hard today and really made us work for everything. We are happy to be returning to Syracuse with a weekend sweep to kick off the season," said head coach Britni Smith. "We have some work to do before next Friday but are looking forward to playing in front of a home crowd. Wear your Orange and come out to support the team at Tennity!"

Todd tallied the first score with just less than eight minutes remaining in the first period for the 1-0 Syracuse lead. The sophomore from Oshawa, Ontario gathered a loose puck in front of the net and buried it for her second career goal. Graduate students Darci Johal and Kate Holmes assisted on the play.

Midway through second period, forward Nea Tervonen tallied her first collegiate goal on an assist from sophomore Maya D'Arcy. In addition to her goal, Tervonen won 15 faceoffs in the game. Two minutes after Tervonen's goal, Post (0-4) cut the Syracuse lead to 2-1 on a goal by Sajel Desai.Â

Less than one minute Into the third period, Syracuse forward Haley Trudeau gave the Orange a 3-1 lead. Holmes and graduate student Alexandria Weiss assisted on Trudeau's first collegiate goal. Post scored again to make it a one goal game, 3-2, when Macy Peterson scored with 11 minutes remaining in the game.

Goalie Allie Kelley had 18 saves in the game, including 10 in the second period.

Syracuse will host Merrimack on Friday, October 6 (6 pm) and Saturday, October 7 at 3 pm at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Fans are encourage to wear orange for the first home series of the 2023-24 season.
