Part one of three is in the books for the No. 7 Syracuse Orange as the squad topped Cornell 4-2 Wednesday night. Two games are on tap for Syracuse this weekend as the Orange travel to Easton, Pennsylvania Friday night before hosting UConn on Sunday for an ACC Network game.
From the Start
- One third of the way through a busy week for the Orange, who remained hot through the high temperatures on Wednesday with a come-from-behind win over Cornell, erasing a 2-0 first-quarter deficit for a 4-2 win.
- Eefke van den Nieuwenhof contributed her second hat trick of the season while rookie Hattie Madden earned the number four spot on Wednesday night's SportsCenter Top 10 with a back-handed chip shot, tying the game with 94 seconds to play in the opening half.
- Syracuse hits the road Friday for a tilt at Lafayette before returning to Central New York on Sunday for a clash against long-time rival UConn.
- Friday's game will be carried on ESPN+ live from Easton, Pennsylvania with Charlie Carbonetto on the call.
- Sunday's noon game will air live on ACC Network with Leah Secondo and Suzanne Bush on the call.
Leading From the Front
- Striking early (and often) has been a cornerstone for the Orange this season.
- Against Monmouth, Syracuse scored just 43 seconds into the home opener as Willemijn Boogert inserted a corner directly to Pieke van de Pas. Syracuse led wire-to-wire for the 5-1 win.
- Through three games this season, Syracuse has led for a total of 153 minutes of a possible 180 minutes
vs. Sacred Heart (Aug. 26): Syracuse led for 54 minutes, 29 seconds
at Vermont (Aug. 27): Syracuse led for 38:59
vs. Monmouth (Sept. 1): Syracuse led for 59:17
Farquhar vs. Lafayette
- Friday night's showdown in the Lehigh Valley will be the first time Lynn Farquhar meets Lafayette as a head coach.
- While leading Saint Joseph's, Farquhar did not have a chance to guide the Hawks against the Leopards.
- As a student-athlete or an assistant coach, Farquhar has never squared up with the Leopards.
Farquhar vs. UConn
- Likewise, Lynn Farquhar has not met the Huskies of UConn as a head coach. Sunday's matchup on ACC Network will be her first.
- Â As an assistant coach at Syracuse, Farquhar and the Orange went 4-4 against their BIG EAST rivals from 2007-2010. Six of those contests were one-goal affairs.
- During her assistant coach tenure at Richmond, Farquhar never coached against UConn.
- As a student-athlete at Old Dominion, Farquhar and the Monarchs played against UConn twice, dropping both contests, once in Norfolk and once in Storrs.
Quick Strikes
- The ACC is a field hockey conference.
- Through the first two and a half weeks of action, the ACC has amassed 20 goals in the first five minutes of any quarter this season. Only one team, Wake Forest, has yet to score a quick-strike goal.
- Virginia leads the ACC with five quick-strike goals, while Syracuse ranks second with four, thanks to a penalty stroke goal in the 47th minute. Boston College, Louisville, and North Carolina have three apiece.Â
- The Orange scored one quick-strike goal in Wednesday's win over Cornell, an Eefke van den Nieuwenhof stroke conversion in the third quarter.
