From the Start
- The final nonconference games of the 2024 season are upon Syracuse field hockey as the Orange hit the road for a pair of games this week.
- Things lead off on Thursday night along the banks of the mighty Susquehanna River as Syracuse takes on Bucknell at 7 p.m. The Orange remain on the road, heading to Storrs, Connecticut for clash against longtime rival UConn. Game time is slated for Noon on Sunday.
- Syracuse is coming off a one-game weekend, dropping as close a contest as you can have with a 3-2 shootout decision at No. 4 Virginia. Syracuse is 3-0 coming off a loss this season and are an impressive 8-2 coming off a loss under second-year head coach Lynn Farquhar. Syracuse has dropped back-to-back regular season games with Farquhar at the helm just once back in 2023.
- Thursday night's game at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium is slated for an ESPN+ broadcast while Sunday's showdown, the 47th all-time meeting between Syracuse and UConn is set to air on UConn+.
Winner Winner
- Bo van Kempen must love chicken dinners because she has racked up the game-winners this year.
- Through the first 14 games of the season, van Kempen has accounted for seven of the 10 game-winning goals for the 'Cuse, including five of the last.
- The graduate student is tied for the most game-winning goals for the Orange since joining the ACC in 2013.
- Assistant coach Emma Russell '16 racked seven during the 2014 season while Charlotte de Vries '23 also scored seven in her senior season (2022). Since 2002, van Kempen, Russell, de Vries, and Martina Loncarica in 2010 have all scored seven GWGs. One more will move van Kempen into the lead for the most in a season since 2002.
FINISH THEM
- They say it's not how you start, but how you finish and late in quarters, the Orange have more finish than a hardware store.
- Syracuse has scored 13 of its 31 goals in the final five minutes of quarters this fall.
- The Orange have goals in the final five minutes quarters in eight of the 14 games to date, including four at Lock Haven in the season opener.
- Syracuse is 7-1 when scoring in the final five minutes of any quarter and 3-3 when not scoring late in periods.
- Syracuse got a literal last minute goal in the Lafayette win as Bo van Kempen slotted home the game-winner with 35 seconds to play. It was all newcomers on the goal as Nina van Asselen drew the penalty corner, that was then insert by Taja Gans, stopped by Annabelle Vossenaar and drag flicked home by van Kempen.
- Syracuse added another at No. 4 Virginia last Friday as van Kempen banged home a corner flick in the 41st minute.
- The Orange lead the ACC with six goals in the final five minutes of the second quarter this season and are tied for the league lead with four in the third quarter.
- Syracuse is tied for the most late goals in the ACC with its 13. North Carolina also has 13 now after launching four against Wake Forest last weekend. Boston College and Virginia have 12 apiece while Louisville and Wake Forest have 11. Duke and California have nine each while Stanford has done so four times this year.
