Orange Victorious In Exhibition, 101-73

An efficient offensive performance propelled Syracuse to a 101-73 victory in its exhibition opener against Clarion on Saturday at the JMA Wireless Dome.
The Orange shot over 50-percent from the field and splashed 12 3-pointers in the triumph.. Four Syracuse players scored in double figures and 11 'Cuse players scored at least one basket.
Guard J.J. Starling paced the Orange with 17 points, forwards Chris Bell and Donnie Freeman each had 16 points, and guard Jaquan Carlos recorded a double-double (14 points-10 assists).
How The Game Was Decided
Syracuse opened the game on a 30-7 run and never looked back on its way to victory. After going up by 11 points with 15:40 remaining in the first half, the Orange maintained a double-digit margin the rest of the game.
Six different Syracuse players scored during the opening scoring stretch, including frontcourt newcomers Petar Majstorovic, Eddie Lampkin, Donnie Freeman and guard Lucas Taylor. Majstorovic started the Syracuse scoring with a layup and the run was capped with a Chris Bell 3-pointer with 10:49 remaining in the first half.Â
The Orange went 13-of-17 from the field to open the game, which included a pair of 3-pointers. On the defensive end, Syracuse held Clarion to just three field goals during the initial 10:30 of play.
Syracuse maintained a steady advantage throughout the rest of the first half and took a 47-29 lead into halftime.
Balanced Attack
Syracuse had four players score at least 14 points – Starling (17), Freeman (16), Bell (16), and Carlos (14). Three more Orange players exceeded five points, with Lampkin and Majstorovic leading that group at eight points.
Of the eight Syracuse players that attempted five or more shots, six finished with a shooting percentage above 50-percent.
Carlos was the only Syracuse player to play more than 24 minutes, logging 30. Nine Syracuse players saw at least 14 minutes of action. Â
Welcome To 'Cuse
Newcomers were key for Syracuse on Saturday, with 55 of the team's 101 points coming by way of fresh faces.
Freeman led the debutants with 16 points. He went 7-of-13 from the field, which included a 3-pointer. His fellow freshmen Majstorovic and Elijah Moore added eight and seven points, respectively.
Carlos had 14 points and Lampkin finished with eight. They also combined for 14 assists of the teams 27 assists.
Notable Numbers
- Carlos registered a double-double in his Syracuse debut, as he dished out a team-best 10 assists to go along with his 14 points.
- Lampkin and Freeman paced the Orange with seven rebounds each. Syracuse finished with a 42-32 advantage on the glass.Â
- Starling reached his 17 points while shooting an impressive 7-of-9 from the field, which included a perfect 4-for-4 effort in the first half.
- Bell led a strong effort behind the arc for Syracuse, as he connected on a team-best four 3-pointers. Starling (three) and Moore (two) also hit multiple triples.
- As a team, Syracuse converted 39-of-73 (.534) from the field.
- Syracuse controlled the game in transition, besting Clarion 24-4 in fast break points.
- The Orange also capitalized on turnovers, scoring 19 points off Clarion giveaways. Carlos had three steals to lead the team.Â
