Orange Hold On To Defeat Colgate
11/12/2024 9:01:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Syracuse (2-0) picked up a double-double from Eddie Lampkin Jr. (15 points-12 rebounds) and withstood a second-half charge from Colgate (2-1), holding off the Raiders for a 74-72 victory at the JMA Wireless Dome in the 176th meeting between the two teams.
Lampkin Jr. scored the go-ahead basket with 46 seconds remaining to punctuate his first Syracuse double-double. Chris Bell (14) and J.J. Starling (12) also scored in double figures for Syracuse.
How The Game Was Decided
After trailing by as many as 13 in the second half, Colgate battled back to within a basket in the closing minutes. Behind by a basket, 72-70, Jeff Woodward converted on a layup for the Raiders to even the score with 1:19 remaining. Lampkin Jr. answered with a bucket of his own on the ensuing Orange possession to put Syracuse back in front by two with 46 seconds on the clock.
Neither team scored again from there, but a series of missed free throws by Syracuse gave Colgate several opportunities to tie or take the lead. After Colgate's Nicolas Louis-Jacques missed a 3-pointer with 27 seconds on the clock, Jyare Davis pulled down a rebound and drew a foul to earn a trip to the line. However, he missed the front end of a one-and-one, allowing for another Colgate possession. With 10 seconds left, the Raiders Jalen Cox misfired on a pull-up jumper, and Davis was again there for the rebound. Just like earlier, Davis missed the front end, and after Lucas Taylor pulled down the offensive board and was fouled, he also missed the first free throw to give the Raiders one final chance. With time ticking down, Colgate got the ball to the corner but could not get a shot off and Syracuse held on.
Syracuse Closes First Half Strong
With the score tied at 30-30 late in a back-and-forth first half, Syracuse went ahead with a pair of triples from Jaquan Carlos and Lucas Taylor. The Orange led 36-33 at the intermission.
The Orange launched a 13-3 run the opening four minutes of the second to establish a 13-point advantage. Bell threw down a dunk on Syracuse's opening trip and finished off a three-point play by making a free throw. On the next Syracuse possession, Starling connected from deep, and Lampkin Jr. joined in on the jaunt down the floor with his first career 3-pointer. Layups by Lampkin Jr. and Donnie Freeman then gave Syracuse a 49-36 advantage, its largest of the game.
Raiders Rally
Colgate battled back after going down double-digits. A Cox 3-pointer trimmed the Orange lead to seven and another triple by Chandler Baker made it a four-point game. Sam Wright hit a jumper before a Cox free throw made the score 57-56 with just over 11 minutes remaining.
Syracuse went back up six later in the half, but Colgate again had the answer. Woodward and Cox converted on three straight layups to draw the Raiders within two. A three-point play from Louis-Jacques cut Syracuse's margin to 72-70 with just over two minutes left.
