Starling’s Career Day Propels Syracuse To Double Overtime Win

J.J. Starling poured in a career-high 38 points on Saturday to help push Syracuse (3-0) past Youngstown State (1-2) in double overtime, 104-95, at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Starling's 38 points were the most by a Syracuse player in a game since Cole Swider also had 38 in an overtime game at North Carolina on Feb. 28, 2022. Of Starling's 38 points, 31 came after the first-half intermission.
The win was Syracuse's first double overtime victory since defeating Indiana 112-110 on Nov. 30, 2021.
How The Game Was Decided
Syracuse took control early in double overtime, with Elijah Moore hitting a 3-pointer to push the Orange ahead 89-87. After a Donnie Freeman rejection on the next Youngstown State possession, Eddie Lampkin Jr. ran the floor for a layup that extended the Orange advantage to four. He went on to string seven consecutive points for Syracuse. Starling added a basket and Freeman made two free throws with 42 seconds left to build the margin to 100-93. for The graduate student proceeded to score the next five points for Syracuse, which was followed by a Starling basket and a pair of Freeman foul shots to make it 100-93. Moore and Starling each converted free throws in the final 21 seconds to close out the scoring.
Starling Stars Late
Starling was clutch in the closing minutes of regulation to help push the game to overtime. With 3:57 left, he converted on a driving layup to cut the Penguin advantage to 62-60. Youngstown went back up 64-62, but Starling again came through with a pair of free throws to even the contest.
Following an EJ Farmer jumper that put Youngstown back in front, Starling connected on two free throws to again put the Orange on top, 70-69. Farmer replied with two makes at the line on the ensuing Youngstown possession, but Starling went back to the charity stripe on Syracuse's next trip down the court and again knotted the score with a made free throw.
Trailing 73-71 after a Nico Galette layup, Starling raced down the floor off the inbound pass and delivered the game-tying layup with eight seconds left, ultimately forcing overtime.
Back-And-Forth Overtime
Syracuse built an early four-point lead in the game's first overtime, with a Freeman jumper and Jaquan Carlos layup breaking a 77-77 deadlock. A three-point play by Chris Bell on the next Syracuse possession stretched the margin to six, and another Starling layup brought the lead to 86-78.
Youngstown State rallied in the final minute, beginning with back-to-back Juwan Maxey 3-pointers to get the Penguins within two. Trailing 86-84, Ty Harper drew a foul with seven seconds left and calmly knocked in a pair of free throws to completely erase Youngstown State's deficit. Starling missed a long, running 3-pointer as time expired, and the first overtime ended where it began – with the score tied.
Second-Half Syracuse Surge
Syracuse rallied in the second half to erase its deficit. After Youngstown State went up nine with 17:39 remaining in regulation, its largest margin of the game, the Orange responded with a 13-4 scoring stretch. The comeback included seven points from Starling and six by Freeman, and evened the score, 46-46. A Penguins triple briefly broke the tie, but consecutive 3-pointers by Starling and Freeman gave Syracuse its first lead of the second half, 52-49.
Penguins Break The Ice Early
Youngstown State controlled the opening minutes of the game with an efficient start from the field. The Penguins went ahead 17-12 in the opening period by making seven of their first 13 shots. Syracuse answered with a 6-0 run and were on top for 25 seconds before Nico Galette hit a 3-pointer to push the Penguins back in front, 20-18.
The Penguins did not trail from there in the opening period and extended their advantage late. Farmer capped off a 13-point first-half effort with a floater to push Youngstown State to a 38-31 edge at the intermission. Youngstown State shot 50-percent (15-of-30) in the first half and knocked down four triples.

Syracuse heads to Brooklyn to compete in the Legends Classic at the Barclays Center on Nov. 21-22. The Orange will open the event against Texas on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.

- Starling set career bests in field goals made (14) and attempted (23). The junior guard also added a season-high six rebounds to go along with three assists.
- Eddie Lampkin Jr. turned in his second straight double-double behind a season-high 20 points and 13 rebounds, six of which came on the offensive glass. Lampkin Jr. also led the team with a career-best seven assists.
- Freshman Donnie Freeman matched Lampkin Jr. with his second double-double of the campaign. He scored a career-high 19 points and added 12 boards.
- Elijah Moore scored five points off the bench and connected on the first triple of his collegiate career in the first overtime period.
- Four Syracuse players registered one block – Jyare Davis, Freeman, Lampkin Jr. and Starling.
- Carlos had three steals, the most by a Syracuse player in a game this season.
- The Orange finished the game shooting just under 51-percent from the field as a team (37-of-73, .507).
- Syracuse made a season-high 25 free throws.
- The Orange won the battle on the glass, 50-35.
- Youngstown State led for 30:24 of the came compared to just 10:49 for Syracuse.
- Farmer was the leading scorer for the Penguins with 26 points, with Galette (21) close behind.
- This was the first overtime game for Syracuse under head coach Adrian Autry. It was also the team's first game to go to multiple overtimes since the Orange defeated Indiana 112-110 in double overtime on Nov. 30, 2021.
