Balance Keys Orange to 7th Victory

The Syracuse football team used perhaps its most complete effort of the season in a road win at Cal on Saturday. It was a game that the Orange never trailed, the offense scored on 7-of-9 possessions and didn't punt until late in the third quarter, the defense had takeaways on the opening two possessions and the 'Cuse special teams were headlined by a perfect afternoon for the field goal unit.
The win sets up a crucial matchup with UConn on Saturday for Syracuse to have an opportunity for its eighth win of the season. An 8+ win regular season isn't something that's happened consistently at Syracuse and shows head coach Fran Brown's elevation of the program in year one.
The Orange have managed to win eight games in the regular season just twice this century – 2001 and 2018. Brown's squad enters the final-two home games of the season boasting a 7-3 record, with each of their six FBS wins coming over teams with a .500-or-better record heading into week 13 of the college football season.
The team has done it thus far with a passing attack that's on pace to shatter numerous program records, with Kyle McCord already breaking the single-season completions record against Cal, with now 304. McCord needs just two more touchdowns to tie the single-season touchdown passes record and is less than 300 yards from breaking the single-season passing record.
He's done it by spreading the wealth to his receivers. Four Syracuse pass-catchers are now over the 50-reception mark on the season. It's the first time in school history that four players have passed that threshold. Trebor Pena (71), Jackson Meeks (59), Oronde Gadsden II (54) and LeQuint Allen Jr. (50) have all benefited this season. Pena is in the top-10 nationally in receptions. Gadsden (fourth) and Allen (second), both are near the top of the national lists for their respective positions.
