CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After backing the Orange to a 2-0 week, a pair of Syracuse University men's lacrosse standouts, Joey Spallina and Mason Kohn, each earned weekly honors from the ACC.
Spallina, an attackman for the Orange, was selected as the ACC Offensive Player of the Week while Kohn, a faceoff specialist, was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) announced its weekly awards Tuesday afternoon.
In addition to ACC weekly honors, Spallina was selected as The Lacrosse Network's Player of the Week and USA Lacrosse Magazine's Division I Player of the Week. The sophomore sensation racked 19 points across two games, scoring seven goals and 12 assists. On Monday against No. 20 Colgate, Spallina tagged the Raiders for four goals and five assists before turning around for another 10 points on Friday against Manhattan. Spallina dropped his third-straight hat trick of the 2024 season, paired with seven assists. He is the first 'Cuse player with 10 points in a single game since Ryan Powell during the 2000 campaign, while his seven assists were the most since Stephen Rehfuss in 2020. His seven helpers are tied for the seventh most in a single game in program history, while his 10 points were just two shy of the school's sophomore record for a game, trailing only head coach Gary Gait's dozen against Navy in 1988.
Kohn had an equally productive week, winning 31 of his 37 faceoffs (.883) for the week. He added 27 ground balls across the two games, while going nearly perfect at the X on Friday against Manhattan, winning 14 of his 15 chances with a baker's dozen ground balls. His 14 loose balls against No. 20 Colgate are tied for the sixth-most in a single game in program history while his 13 on Friday are tied for the 11th most. Kohn was a force on the offensive side of the ball as well, adding six points in two games, including four against No. 20 Colgate with one goal and three helpers. He added a goal and an assist against Manhattan as well. Of his 31 wins, 12 resulted directly in goals for the Orange on the possession following a win this week.
A huge test awaits the Orange as No. 7/No. 5 Syracuse hosts No. 4/No. 4 Maryland on Saturday on ESPNU. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at the JMA Wireless Dome as part of a doubleheader day. The No. 5 Syracuse women take on No. 9 Maryland at noon. Tickets are available at cuse.com/tickets.
Saturday will be a 15 For Life event for both games, working closely with the 15 For Life Foundation, created in honor of the late Syracuse standout Rob Kavovit. 15 For Life's mission is to shed the shame around needing help and normalizing the conversation around mental health by creating awareness so that our loss may help others.
