Orange Hold Off Fighting Irish On Jim Boeheim Day

A season-high 25,194 fans attended "Jim Boeheim Day" and saw Syracuse (18-10, 9-8 ACC) hold off Notre Dame (10-17, 5-11), 88-85, in the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday afternoon.

Five Orange performers scored in double-figures, led by sophomore guard Judah Mintz with 21 points. Sophomore forward Chris Bell (18), sophomore center Maliq Brown (14), sophomore guard J.J. Starling (14) and sophomore forward Justin Taylor (10) also contributed double-digit point totals.
WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED
With Syracuse ahead 10 points with 3:30 to go, Notre Dame freshman guard Braeden Shrewsberry hit consecutive 3-pointers and junior guard Julian Roper II knocked one in from long range in a 9-2 run that brought the Irish within three, 86-83, with 1:07 remaining.
Syracuse stood tall on defense, forcing an errant 3-pointer from Shrewsberry that was rebounded by Bell. He was fouled and made both of his attempts at the line, which gave the Orange an 88-83 lead with 17 seconds left. Freshman guard Markus Burton drove for a layup that cut Notre Dame's deficit to three. Copeland was fouled on the inbound and sent to the line. He missed his attempt on the one-and-one and freshman forward Carey Booth came up with the ball. Burton missed his 3-point attempt with five second left and the Orange secured the rebound. The Irish fouled with one second remaining, and sophomore guard Kyle Cuffe Jr. missed his attempt at the line. Sophomore forward Tae Davis grabbed the board, but Notre Dame was unable to get a shot off in time and Syracuse stood victorious.

Syracuse University Athletics honored legendary coach and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame member Jim Boeheim '66 at the conclusion of the contest. The ceremony recognized the numerous contributions he has made to Syracuse - the university and the community - as part of "Jim Boeheim Day." Friends, family and former Syracuse players attended to celebrate his illustrious 47-year career at the helm of the men's basketball program and the contributions he has made to the greater Syracuse community.
ORANGE NATION CROWDS THE DOME
The announced attendance of 25,194 represented the largest on-campus crowd of the season in college basketball. The Dome has posted the top attendance number in each season except one since the building opened in 1980. The streak was broken for one year due to the Covid pandemic when spectators were limited.
NOTRE DAME SURGES IN SECOND HALF
The Fighting Irish scored 16 of the first 22 points to start the second half. The Orange held a 23-point advantage with 17:55 to go in the contest. Notre Dame found rhythm at the 17:09 mark, as Shrewsbury made two consecutive 3-pointers, followed by a long range shot and conventional three-point play from Markus Burton. Tae Davis capped a 14-1 run for the Fighting Irish with a slam dunk off a fastbreak, cutting their deficit to 55-45 with 15:04 remaining. Copeland halted the Notre Dame run with a conventional three-point play that allowed the Orange to hold a double-figure advantage.
Syracuse kept a double-digit lead until Notre Dame's Davis and Burton hit consecutive 3-pointers to cut its deficit to eight, 65-57, with 10:16 to go. Shrewsberry knocked down two from beyond the arc in an 8-4 run for the Fighting Irish that brought them within four of the Orange with 8:03 left. That marked the first time Notre Dame was within four points since 5:25 into the contest. Bell hit his fourth 3-pointer of the contest to spark an 11-5 Syracuse run that put the Orange ahead by double-figures, 80-70, with 5:37 remaining. Although Notre Dame came close in the final five minutes, Syracuse never lost the lead and powered to victory.
CAPITALIZING OFF TURNOVERS
The Fighting Irish scored the first five points of the contest before Mintz stopped Notre Dame's run with a jumper. His basket sparked a run of seven straight points for the Orange to take a 7-5 lead 3:23 into the affair. After a Notre Dame bucket from Booth, three Orange contributed to seven unanswered points, which put Syracuse in front, 14-7, with 13:47 to go in the first half. The Fighting Irish put a stop to the run with a mid-range jumper. The Orange retaliated with 10-straight points, including five from Mintz, to own a 15-point advantage with 10 minutes to go before halftime.
With a 13-point advantage 12:35 into the contest, the Orange went on a 20-4 run that lasted until 2:50 left in the first half and gave Syracuse a 29-point lead, 47-18. Of the five Orange that contributed during the run, Taylor led the way with six followed by Brown with four. Notre Dame fought back and ended the half on an 11-2 rally, which included nine unanswered points to finish the period, and the squads went into the intermission with the Orange in front, 49-29.
