WASHINGTON, D.C. – Two Syracuse University men's lacrosse players have been named as nominees for the Tewaaraton Award, which honors the top male and female lacrosse players in the country. Graduate student Will Mark and sophomore Joey Spallina were named among the 25 men's lacrosse players on the list of nominees.
The Tewaaraton Foundation announced its 25 men's and top 25 women's nominees Thursday afternoon. Eighteen schools were represented on the men's side, with multiple nominees from just six programs, including Syracuse's pair.
One of the top netminders in Division I, Mark is ranked in the top 20 in save percentage (.556), goals against average (10.02) and saves per game (12.14), a stat in which he also leads the ACC. Across his career between Syracuse and LIU, Mark has made 876 saves, which ranks eight all-time in Division I. The Danville, California product has made 170 saves to date at a 55.6 percent clip. He has double digit saves in 12 of the 14 games this year while backstopping Syracuse to its first 10-win season since 2017. Mark has allowed single-digit goals in seven games this year, including two in ACC competition.
Continuing his prolific career as the only sophomore among the 25 men's nominees, Spallina leads Syracuse with 76 points, including 29 goals and 47 assists, which is the eighth-most assists by a 'Cuse player in a single season. Nationally, Spallina is fourth in assists per game (3.36), tied for 13th with five man-up goals, and fourth in points per game (5.43), all of which are inside the top five in the ACC.
Mark, Spallina and seventh-ranked Syracuse take on No. 4/4 Virginia on Saturday, April 20 with a 2 p.m. opening faceoff. Jay Alter and Paul Carcaterra will have the call for ESPNU in the nationally televised contest. Saturday will be a special day as Syracuse will honor the legendary Paul Gait with a jersey retirement ceremony at halftime.
