The Syracuse varsity four beat Yale and Cornell at the Cayuga Cup on Saturday on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Coxswain Chloe Van de Meulebroecke guided the boat that included stroke Elizabeth Vogt, Charlotte Ebel, Alice McNeill and bow Mae Sweeney. In the races against #5 Yale, the 8th-ranked Orange registered the varsity four win, four second place finishes and one fourth place result.
Â
"In our second race of the season it is super exciting to have a performance like we did today because it means we are building depth and self-belief we can compete with the best teams in the country," said head coach Luke McGee. "It was really exciting, to see the varsity four lead and win that race. That was great. The varsity eight had a great race. Yale slipped out early and we were able to come back, and just could not quite close it down and lost by less than a second against a team that is traditionally a top-five team in the country. That means that we are doing things well and the team is in a good spot."
Â
In the varsity eight race, Syracuse crossed the finish line in 6:15.720, less than seven tenths of a second behind Yale (6:15.026). The Orange boat included coxswain Caileigh Grimes, stroke Emmie Frederico, Ellie-Kate Hutchinson, Alena Criss, Zoe Acosta, Kamile Kralikaite, India Aikens, Aphrodite Gioulekas and bow Izabela Krakic. Cornell was third (6:43.689). Yale retained the Cayuga Cup, created in 2003 for the winner of the varsity eight race between Cornell, Yale and Syracuse.
Â
The second varsity eight took second, finishing the race in 6:36.149, behind Yale (6:15.026) and ahead of Cornell (7:00.416). Coxswain April Serrano guided the boat that included stroke Olivia Bachert, Kaitlyn Dennis, Nora Radke, Lena Radke, Lauren Coop, Aicha Abdelaziz, Haley Uliasz and bow Grace Loveridge.
Â
The second varsity four, coxswained by Isabelle DeSantis with stroke Minaya Bishop, Kelsey Boswell, Maddy Gisby and bow Lea Dahn, placed second behind Yale and ahead of third place Cornell.
Â
Syracuse's third and fourth varsity race went down the course against the 3V8s of Yale and Cornell. The Orange 3V8, that included coxswain Dana Shearer, stroke Annabelle McCulloch, Maddi Segarnick, Taylor Lewandowski, Emma Cloud, Sarah Haney, Haley Minnick, Margaux Gryska and bow Kelly Brown, finished second behind Yale. The 'Cuse 4V8 was fourth finishing after third-place Cornell. Coxswain Isabelle Sareen guided the boat that included stroke Lea Guttormson, Olyma Desarmes, Olivia Olsen, Abigail Rockwood, Mara McBride, Abigail Berner, Lily Thorpe and bow Cassandra Dasco.
Â
Syracuse will face top 20 programs for the third consecutive race at the UVA Invitational on April 13 and 14 on Lake Monticello in Virginia. The Orange will race #7 California and #18 Oregon State on Saturday morning and #1 Stanford on Sunday morning.
