Star linebacker Marlowe Wax earned his first preseason accolade ahead of the 2024 campaign. The senior was named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List.
The Lott IMPACT Trophy is presented annually to the Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year. The award also takes into account a player's character and honors a defensive player who has had the biggest impact on his team both on and off the field. IMPACT stands for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity, all characteristics exhibited by NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, the award's namesake, during his illustrious playing career.
Forty two candidates were announced as candidates for the award, now in its 21st season, at a luncheon on Thursday in Newport Beach, California.
Wax, who has played in all-49 games since arriving on campus in 2020, including a team-best active streak of 38 consecutive starts, enters the 2024 season closing in on 300 career tackles. A Second Team All-ACC selection last season, Wax enters his final season in the top-20 of numerous Orange career record lists.
He's 19th in total tackles (294), second in forced fumbles (8), trailing only College and Pro Football Hall of Famer Dwight Freeney (14), seventh in tackles for loss (36.5). He also has 16.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries, five pass breakups and a blocked kick in his 'Cuse career.
It's the first watch list of the season for Wax, who was named to the Bednarik, Butkus, Lombardi and Senior Bowl Award Watch Lists last season. Most major awards will begin announcing watch lists in late July.
