Syracuse is 1-of-17 schools nationally with multiple players on the Maxwell Award Preseason Watch List, which was released on Monday.
The Orange have running back LeQuint Allen Jr. and quarterback Kyle McCord represented on the award's watch list, which is presented annually to college football's most outstanding player.
Presented annually since 1937, the award is named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell, who was a former standout at Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.
Eighty players made the preseason watch list, led by the Atlantic Coast Conference, which boasts 20 candidates. While the Orange have two players on this year's preseason watch list, the squad enters 2024 with three players on its roster who have been named to a Maxwell Award Watch List, after Oronde Gadsden II made the cut last season before suffering a season-ending injury.
Allen was a Second Team All-ACC performer at running back last season. He enters his third season at 'Cuse with 1,338 career rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. He also has 55 collegiate receptions for 330 yards and a pair of scores. He enters the season 37th in school history in rushing yards.
McCord transferred to Syracuse in December after spending his first three seasons at Ohio State. The senior signal caller has 3,776 passing yards in his collegiate career with 27 touchdowns to just eight interceptions. He left the Buckeyes ranked fourth in school history in completion percentage (66.5) and fifth in passing yards per game (264.0). He begins this season ranked fourth among active FBS quarterbacks in career completion percentage (66.5).
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced November 12, 2024, while the three finalists for the Maxwell Award will be unveiled November 26, 2024. The winners of the 88th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 12, 2024. The formal presentations of the Maxwell Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards on Friday March 14, 2024 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.
