ORANGEVILLE, Ontario – In the appropriately-named town of Orangeville, Ontario, four Syracuse University men's lacrosse standouts help the Northmen capture the Iroquois Trophy, awarded to the Ontario Junior Lacrosse League (OJLL) champion.
Trey Deere, Donny Scott, Jake Spallina, and Joey Spallina all played for the Orangeville Northmen this summer in the OJLL's Junior A division. A perennial powerhouse, Orangeville out-lasted the Mimico Mountaineers in the best-of-seven series, capturing game seven 20-12 in front of the home crowd at Tony Rose Arena on Sunday.
With the provincial title, Orangeville moves on to the national stage and a chance to play for a Minto Cup.
It was an Orange-studded final series as another two Syracuse players, Finn Thomson and Jordan Vincent, played with Mimico this summer.
Joey Spallina put on a clinic in the deciding game, scoring 13 points on seven goals and six assists, with double teammate Trey Deere accounting for another 10 points on three goals and seven assists.
Joey Spallina led the OJLL with 202 points across his 29 games played. He racked 80 goals with 122 assists, leading the OJLL in both categories. Spallina was the only player in the League this summer with over 100 assists. The rising junior accounted for 22 power play goals with 32 power play assists, in addition to four short-handed goals and seven short-handed assists.
Deere finished fourth in the OJLL with 159 points on 68 goals and 91 assists, ranking second among players born after 2004. Deere tallied 14 point play goals and 25 assists on the power play while serving 71 penalty minutes, third-most among forwards in the OJLL this summer.
Returning to the OJLL after an injury sidelined him last summer, Scott played in 19 games with a goal and five assists for six points. He added a short-handed assist alongside 12 penalty minutes.
Jake Spallina saw time in 21 games this summer, scoring a goal with two assists. His goal came as a short-handed effort while one of his assists was on the power play. He served eight minutes in the box this summer.
All told, the Northmen went 10-3-0 during the playoffs, with the three setbacks coming against Mimico in the finals.
Minto Cup action begins on Saturday, August 17 as the Northmen take on the POCO Saints from the British Columbia Junior A Lacrosse League (BCJALL). The Minto Cup will be hosted at Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex in Coquitlam, British Columbia until August 24 at the latest.
