The JMA Wireless Dome has been an iconic venue and gathering place for the Central New York community for over four decades, with many unforgettable moments along the way.
A special anniversary now awaits, as the Syracuse football game against Stanford will be the 44th anniversary of the building's opening. The number 44 is part of the fabric of Syracuse University, from the legendary trio of running backs who donned the iconic jersey to 'Plaza 44' where their statues now sit. Even the last two digits of the zip code the school resides in and first two digits of campus phone numbers are 44.
The Stanford game will pair the historic building with the University's famous number. Originally named the Carrier Dome, following a first of its kind naming rights deal with the Syracuse-based company, the building opened on Sept. 20, 1980, 44 years to the day of next week's game.

The 1979 Orange football team played the entire season on the road during the construction of the stadium. When the team finally returned, running back Joe Morris, who held the program rushing record for over 40 years, christened the building by returning a kickoff for a touchdown headlining the building's first victory. The win set the stage for 44 years of memories in the building. Members of the 1980 squad have been invited back to the JMA Dome to celebrate the anniversary.
The only domed stadium in the Northeast, the JMA Dome is the largest structure of its kind on a college campus in the country. Since its opening in 1980, the facility has hosted a wide variety of events. The home of the Orange's football, men's and women's basketball and men's and women's lacrosse programs, the Dome has hosted numerous rounds of NCAA Championships in basketball, lacrosse and track and field, regional and state scholastic competitions in football, as well as NBA preseason games. It has also played host to Olympic champion ice skating shows and professional hockey.
In addition to sporting events, the Dome has hosted concerts with internationally renowned recording artists, including Elton John, Billy Joel, the Rolling Stones, U2, Garth Brooks, Genesis, The Who, Neil Diamond, Pink Floyd, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pink and many more. It also annually hosts Monster Jam and numerous campus events such as commencement and the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration of life dinner.
Over the past-five years, numerous upgrades have been made to the building to transform the venue and create an upgraded fan experience. In 2020, the Loud House debuted a new fixed roof, centerhung scoreboard, upgraded lighting and air conditioning. This past offseason, chairback seating was installed throughout the venue.
Syracuse Athletics has debuted a special logo to celebrate the 44th anniversary of the Dome and will have celebrations throughout the Stanford game for this special anniversary.
