From the Start
- ACC play opens this weekend as No. 15 Syracuse travels south to Chapel Hill for a Friday evening showdown against the reigning national champion, North Carolina. The Orange round out the road trip with a Sunday morning tilt at Longwood University in Farmville.
- The Orange went 2-0 last weekend, besting Northeastern 2-0 and picking up a 2-1 last-second win over Patriot League runner up Lafayette at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
- Syracuse is looking for its first-ever win against the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill and halting a four-game slide. Sunday's match at Longwood will be the first-ever meeting between programs.
- This weekend kicks off a two-week road swing for the Orange as Syracuse heads back to North Carolina next weekend for a pair of ACC clashes at Duke (Friday) and Wake Forest (Sunday). The Wake Forest game will be a venue preview for the Orange as the Demon Deacons are slated to host the 2024 ACC Field Hockey Championship in early November.
Knocked Down? Get Right Back Up
- Syracuse suffered its first loss of the season against No. 14 Ohio State in the second weekend, a 5-0 decision at home.
- The Orange do not suffer setbacks like that often. Since joining the ACC in 2013, Syracuse has lost games by a 3-0 count or more just five times.
- After those losses, Syracuse has responded very well, winning the next game four times in the four previous chances, thanks to a 2-0 win over Northeastern on Sept. 13.
- The only time Syracuse did not bounce back after a 3-0 or worse loss was in 2014. After falling 3-0 at No. 1 North Carolina, Syracuse fell in overtime 3-2 against Boston College the next week.
- Last season, Syracuse dropped a 4-0 game at No. 9 Duke before returning two days later to J.S. Coyne Stadium and piling up a 6-2 win over Wagner.
You Look Familiar...
- There will be some familiarity between coaching staffs on Sunday between Syracuse and Longwood, despite the teams meeting for the first time ever.
- Syracuse assistant coach Sam Brown was an assistant coach at James Madison University, located in Harrisonburg, Virginia and about 120 miles from Longwood, while current Longwood head coach Miranda Rigg was a senior member of the Dukes' team and served as a team captain during the 2019 campaign. Rigg is in her third season guiding the Lancers while Brown is currently in his second year on the Orange bench.
FINISH THEM
- They say it's not how you start, but how you finish and late in quarters, the Orange have more finish than a hardware store.
- Syracuse has scored seven of its 15 goals in the final five minutes of quarters this fall.
- The Orange have goals in the final five minutes quarters in three of the five games to date, including four at Lock Haven in the season opener.
- Syracuse got a literal last minute goal in the Lafayette win as Bo van Kempen slotted home the game-winner with 35 seconds to play. It was all newcomers on the goal as Nina van Asselen drew the penalty corner, that was then insert by Taja Gans, stopped by Annabelle Vossenaar and drag flicked home by van Kempen.
- Boston College, Duke and Wake Forest all have six goals in the final five minutes of quarters this year, followed by Virginia (5), Louisville (5), North Carolina (4), California (3) and Stanford (2).
