
Syracuse Battles #8 UNC In 1-0 Defeat

#8 North Carolina (10-1-0, 3-1-0) scored on a second-half penalty kick and outlasted Syracuse (6-5-1, 0-4-0), 1-0, in a defensive battle on Sunday at the SU Soccer Stadium.
THE FIRST-HALF BATTLE
The two squads went back and forth in the first 45 minutes, with neither side able to break out in front. North Carolina held the majority of the possession, and had an 8-0 advantage in shots, but Syracuse's defensive front and junior goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch were able to keep the contest scoreless headed into the break.
UNC TALLIES FROM THE SPOTÂ
The contest remained knotted at 0-0 until 20 minutes into the second half. Following a video review, Syracuse was handed a foul and the Tar Heels awarded a penalty kick. Bella Sember converted at 65:10, earning her fifth goal of the season and her second successful penalty kick.
BUSY ON THE BACK LINE
Vanderbosch and the Syracuse defense kept the outcome up for grabs until the final whistle. Vanderbosch finished with six saves including a number of point-blank stops.Â
