From the Start
- It's a double ACC weekend in North Carolina on tap for the Syracuse Orange, opening Friday night at Wake Forest (6 p.m.) before a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal matchup at No. 9 Duke (Noon).
- Both games will be aired nationally on ACC Network, with Leah Secondo and Suzanne Bush on the call.
- The Orange split last weekend's results, falling at No. 2 North Carolina before bouncing back with a 4-0 shutout win at Longwood.Â
- Friday and Sunday mark the first of two double ACC weekends for the Orange this season, paired with a home weekend against conference newcomers Stanford (Oct. 11) and Cal (Oct. 13) at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
- This weekend wraps up a two-week road swing for the Orange, who return to Coyne on Oct. 4 to take on Louisville at 4 p.m.
A Unique Opportunity
- This weekend presents a unique opportunity for the Syracuse Orange: Two conference games in the same weekend.
- Since joining the ACC in 2013, the Orange have not played a pair of league opponents in the same weekend during the regular season.
- Not only will the Orange do that once this season, but twice when adding a mid-October weekend against Stanford and Cal.
- The last time Syracuse played two conference games in the same weekend was during the 1994 campaign, winning both BIG EAST games on the road at Villanova (2-0) and at Georgetown (4-0).
- Since 1990, Syracuse has played back-to-back conference games three times, going 5-1 in those contests, all BIG EAST games involving Syracuse, Villanova, and Georgetown.
FINISH THEM
- They say it's not how you start, but how you finish and late in quarters, the Orange have more finish than a hardware store.
- Syracuse has scored eight of its 19 goals in the final five minutes of quarters this fall.
- The Orange have goals in the final five minutes quarters in four of the seven games to date, including four at Lock Haven in the season opener and most recently at Longwood.
- Syracuse got a literal last minute goal in the Lafayette win as Bo van Kempen slotted home the game-winner with 35 seconds to play. It was all newcomers on the goal as Nina van Asselen drew the penalty corner, that was then insert by Taja Gans, stopped by Annabelle Vossenaar and drag flicked home by van Kempen.
- Syracuse is third in the ACC with its eight goals in the final five minutes of quarters. Boston College scored four such goals last weekend to take the lead with 10 on the year. Louisville is third with nine while North Carolina also has eight. Virginia (7), Duke (6), Wake Forest (6), California (5) and Stanford (3) round out the league's last minute goals.
