
McDonald Semifinalist for Campbell Trophy

IRVING, Texas – Syracuse redshirt junior Derek McDonald is a semifinalist for the 2024 William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes an individual as the best scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership. The National Football Foundation (NFF) announced the semifinalists on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

McDonald has started every game at linebacker the past two seasons. He ranks second on the squad with 22 tackles through three games this season. In 2023, McDonald was third on the team with a career-high 57 tackles. He also recorded 4.0 tackles for loss and two sacks.

The Atlanta native has participated in numerous community service events, including visiting local schools and youth clinics. In addition, McDonald is a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Student Leader.

McDonald has also been recognized for his work in the classroom. He is a two-time All-ACC Academic Team honoree and a 2023 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District selection. McDonald, who has already earned his bachelor's degree in broadcast and digital journalism, has been a member of the Dean's List and the Syracuse Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester.

The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists for the Campbell Trophy on Oct. 23 and the winner will be announced at the 66th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 10 in Las Vegas.
