
Syracuse Continues Unbeaten Start With Win Over Manhattan

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team (6-0) polished off a Big Apple Tournament Sweep on Saturday with a four-set victory against Manhattan.
The Orange improved to 6-0 on the season with the victory. 'Cuse has now gone undefeated at the Salt City Classic and Big Apple Tournament to begin its 2024 campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Manhattan took an early 3-1 lead before the Orange won four straight points, highlighted by a pair of Sara Wasiakowska aces. The Jaspers responded with a 3-0 run of their own to briefly retake the lead, but 'Cuse rattled off three straight points in response with kills by Skylar George, Sydney Moore and Mira Ledermueller. Syracuse maintained the lead throughout the rest of the set, and a late 9-0 run that included three George aces ballooned the Orange's lead to 22-12. Ava Palm closed out a 25-14 victory for the Orange with a kill.
With the score level at 6-6 in the second, 'Cuse won five straight points to take control courtesy of two kills each from George and Palm. The Jaspers pulled within one several times and brought the Syracuse lead down to just two at 22-20. However, the Orange pulled together to close out the set, as Zharia Harris-Waddy and Wasiakowska both converted on kills to secure a 25-20 win.
The Jaspers sprinted out to an 8-3 advantage in the third before Syracuse responded with a 6-0 run that began with a pair of George kills. The Orange went ahead by three at 12-9 but could not pull away any further. 'Cuse led 20-18 when the Jaspers launched a 7-1 run to steal the third set, 25-21.
Manhattan took an early two-point lead in the fourth set, but the Orange took their first lead of the frame at 5-4 via a Palm kill. The Jaspers battled back to retake the lead at 11-10 and 12-11 before a 6-1 'Cuse run put the Orange back out in front. A Mira Ledermueller ace set up Syracuse match points at 24-14, but Manhattan continued to fight, saving six of them. Finally, Harris-Waddy ended the match with a kill to complete a Syracuse victory.
NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS

The Orange will compete in the Siena Tournament on Sept. 12-14. Siena will host the event, which will also include NJIT and Idaho. 'Cuse will face Siena on Sept. 12, NJIT on Sept. 13 and Idaho on Sept. 14.

NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS
• Ava Palm paced the Orange with 14 kills and has now reached double-digits in all six of Syracuse's matches this season. Palm's 82 kills through the first two weekends of the season are the most on the team. She also chipped in eight digs and has now had at least five in every match.
• Skylar George delivered her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and a team-high 11 digs. The 13 kills were a career-high for the redshirt freshman, who has now reached double-digit kills in four matches this season, including all three at the Big Apple Tournament. George also served a career-best five aces to go along with three blocks.
• George wasn't Syracuse's only double-double on Saturday, as Mira Ledermueller also posted her second of the weekend. The sophomore led the Orange with 30 assists and added 10 digs for the fourth double-double of her career. Ledermueller averaged 9.27 assists per set in the Big Apple Tournament.
• This was the first time multiple Syracuse players have recorded a double-double in the same match since Polina Shemanova (19 kills, 22 digs), Lauren Woodford (21 assists, 13 digs) and Viktoriia Lokhmanchuk (16 kills, 11 digs) did so on Oct. 28, 2022, against Florida State.

• Sydney Moore continued her terrific start to the season Saturday with eight kills and a team-best seven blocks. Moore is up to 28 blocks this season and has three matches with at least five. This was also her fourth match this season hitting .500 or better.
• Greta Schlichter and Emma Ortiz, Syracuse's two liberos, finished the day with eight and seven digs, respectively. Schlichter also had a career-best five assists and two aces.
• Sara Wasiakowska matched Skylar George for the team lead in aces with five. It was her career best and brings her season total to 13, the most on the team.
• Making her second straight start, Zharia Harris-Waddy put down five kills, three blocks and an ace.
• Setter Piper Willinger made her Syracuse debut in the fourth set, tallying five assists in the team's clinching victory.
• After hitting 13 aces against Fordham on Friday, Syracuse upped its total on Saturday, finishing with 15, the most in a match for the team since reaching 16 against Boston College on Sept. 23, 2016.
• The Orange accrued double-digit blocks (10) for the third time this season.
