A career-best 23 boards by Eddie Lampkin Jr. were not enough for Syracuse (9-11, 3-6 ACC) on Saturday at the JMA Wireless Dome, as the Orange dropped a tight decision to Pittsburgh (13-6, 4-4 ACC), 77-73.
Lampkin Jr. added 10 points to notch his fifth double-double in the last six contests and his eighth of the campaign. J.J. Starling led the Orange in scoring with 16 points.
How The Game Was Decided
With the game tied at 45 with just over 12 minutes remaining, the Panthers went on an 8-0 scoring run, taking a lead they did not relinquish throughout the rest of the encounter.
The Orange fought back valiantly, cutting the deficit to three with 2:48 to go after Lucas Taylor knocked down a pair of free throws to make the score 67-64. However, on the next Pittsburgh possession, Zack Austin connected on a 3-pointer to put the Panthers back ahead by six. Syracuse trimmed the deficit to just two twice in the final 20 seconds but the Panthers were clutch at the line, knocking down four free throws in that span to seal the victory.
Lampkin's Career Rebounding Day
Lampkin Jr. set a career high with 23 rebounds, becoming the first Syracuse player to eclipse 20 boards in a game since Jesse Edwards had 20 against Wake Forest on March 4, 2023. It was the first 23-rebound game by a Syracuse player since Derrick Coleman against Villanova on March 10, 1990.
Lampkin almost matched his previous career best of 14 in the first half alone, grabbing 12 boards before the break. Eight of his rebounds came on the offensive glass, while his 15 defensive boards set another career mark. The center has now hit double-digit rebounds 10 times this season, including in eight of his last 10 appearances.
Balanced First-Half Attack
Eight different players combined for Syracuse's 31 first-half points, with Petar Majstorovic and Taylor leading the way with six apiece. Jyare Davis and Lampkin Jr. both added five points of their own.
The Orange got 11 points from their bench in the opening 20 minutes compared to just three from the Pittsburgh reserves. Despite finishing the first half making only two of its last 13 field goal attempts, Syracuse shot 43-percent in the period to take a narrow 33-32 lead into intermission.
Torrid Start
Syracuse raced out to an early 15-7 advantage after making its first five attempts from the field. After the Panthers scored the first basket of the game, Starling answered with a triple on the next Orange possession. Davis then scored five straight Syracuse points before Taylor converted on a layup. An Elijah Moore 3-pointer capped a 13-4 run for the Orange in the first 3:22 of game action.
