Syracuse (9-11, 3-6 ACC) kicks off its two-game west coast trip Wednesday night with a matchup against Stanford (14-6, 6-3 ACC). The contest will tip-off at 11 p.m. and will air live on ESPNU.
Setting The Stage
The Orange are coming off a narrow 77-73 defeat to Pittsburgh on Saturday at the Dome. Eddie Lampkin Jr. grabbed a career-high 23 boards to help Syracuse outrebound the Panthers, 48-31, while also scoring 10 points for his eighth double-double of the campaign. J.J. Starling led the Orange in scoring with 16 points.
Competing in their first season as an ACC member, the Cardinal enter Wednesday's encounter on a three-game conference winning streak. The most recent victory came Saturday versus Florida State, with Stanford defeating the Seminoles, 78-71. The winning streak began with an impressive road triumph at North Carolina.
Stanford is led by first-year head coach Kyle Smith, who had successful stints at Washington State, San Francisco and Columbia before joining the Cardinal, going 258-193 at those three stops.
The Syracuse-Stanford Series
The Orange and Cardinal have met just once, with the game taking place at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 25, 2011, as part of the NIT Season Tipoff. Syracuse closed the game on an 18-5 run to edge Stanford, 69-63. Five Syracuse players reached double figures that night, led by Kris Joseph's 18 points. The Orange also recorded 19 steals, with five different players notching at least three.
Lampkin Climbs The Ladder
Against Pittsburgh, Lampkin Jr. became the first Syracuse player to tally 23 rebounds in a game since Derrick Coleman did so against Villanova on March 10, 1990, at the Big East Tournament. Only two Syracuse players have grabbed more rebounds in a single game than Lampkin Jr. – Frank Reddout with 34 versus Temple on Feb. 9, 1952, and Dave Bing with 25 against Cornell on Feb. 8, 1966.
Lampkin's 23-rebound performance is one of the top 10 efforts on the glass in Syracuse history. Additionally, his 15 defensive rebounds versus the Panthers were the sixth most in a single game in Orange history, with the all-time Syracuse record sitting at 16. The 23 rebounds were also the most by any ACC player in a game since Armando Bacot also had 23 for North Carolina against James Madison on Nov. 20, 2022.
With 10 points against the Panthers, Lampkin Jr. also posted his fifth double-double in the last six outings and his team-best eighth of the campaign. Over the last 10 games, Lampkin Jr. is averaging 11.4 rebounds and currently leads the ACC in offensive rebounds per game (3.5) while ranking No. 3 in the ACC in total rebounds per game (9.0).
Welcome Back, J.J.
Starling has picked up where he left off since returning from his injury, as Syracuse's leading scorer has recorded double figures in six of his seven appearances since rejoining the lineup. He is averaging 17.9 points per contest over that span.
Last week, Starling led the Orange with 25 points against Clemson and 16 points versus Pittsburgh. He went 10-of-16 on field goal attempts against the Tigers, making a season-high five 3-pointers. It was his fourth game with 20-plus points since returning from injury.
Starling is averaging 18.8 points per outing on the campaign. His 38 points from the Orange's double-overtime victory against Youngstown State were a career high and the second most by any ACC player in a game this season.
Reserve Contributions
Over the last four games, Syracuse's bench is averaging 26.6 points. Chris Bell and Petar Majstorovic combined for 22 of Syracuse's 24 bench points Saturday against Pittsburgh, as the Orange reserves outscored the Pitt's, 24-14. Syracuse's reserves have outscored the opponent's bench in 15 straight contests.
Â
The best scoring effort from the Orange bench over the last four games came against Louisville, with Syracuse getting 36 points from its bench unit. Half of those points came from Bell, who knocked down four 3-pointers on his way to an 18-point effort.
Â
Majstorovic has become a pivotal member of the Syracuse rotation in recent games. He has played 20-plus minutes in four consecutive outings and set a career high with his 10 points against Pittsburgh. Over the last five contests, the freshman is averaging 4.4 boards.
Â
Crashing The Glass
As a team, Syracuse grabs 38.0 rebounds per contest, the fourth most in the ACC. The Orange boast a plus-3.5 margin on the season and have recorded double-digit offensive boards 12 times on the campaign, which included 20 offensive boards Saturday versus Pittsburgh to match their season-high tally.
Syracuse was plus-17 on the glass against Pittsburgh, winning the rebounding battle, 48-31. The rebounding margin was the largest of the season for the Orange. In addition to Lampkin's career-best 23 boards, Lucas Taylor delivered a season high with seven rebounds.
Three different Syracuse players have pulled down 10 or more rebounds in a game this season – Lampkin Jr. (10 times), Freeman (seven times) and Davis (one time). Lampkin has grabbed double-digit boards in eight of the last 10 outings, while Freeman has secured double figures in two of his last three appearances.
Scouting Stanford
Maxime Raynaud is the ACC's leading scorer entering Wednesday, as the forward averages 20.5 points per contest. He has two games this season with 30-plus points, as he scored 33 against UC Davis and 32 versus Santa Clara. Jaylen Blakes and Oziyah Sellers are tied for second on the Cardinal in scoring with 14.6 points per contest each.
Â
Raynaud also leads the conference in rebounding to average a double-double, as he is currently the only ACC player averaging double-digit boards (11.7) with an NCAA-best 16 double-doubles through Stanford's first 20 games. Blakes leads the Cardinal in assists (103) and steals (37) while Raynaud has the team lead in blocks (22). Â
Â

Freeman, a McDonald's All-American and the second-highest Syracuse recruit in program history, is one of two freshmen to make this year's Malone Award watch list.Â
Freeman, who has missed the past six games due to injury, has registered six double-doubles on the campaign and is averaging 15.3 points over his last nine appearances. He has scored 15 or more in six games over that stretch.

The list for both awards will be narrowed to 10 in late January, and then to just five in late February. In March, the five finalists for both awards will be presented to Abdul-Jabbar, Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee where winners will be selected.Â
