Syracuse (5-8-4, 1-7-1), boosted by 10 saves from senior goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch, battled #7 Duke (10-3-1, 5-3) to the end in an eventual 2-0 defeat in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils won for the 19th time in the last 22 home matches.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
For the second consecutive Syracuse contest, a penalty kick secured the game's outcome. Late in the opening half, a video review was called. It revealed an Orange hand ball in the penalty area. Duke took advantage with Kat Rader connecting on the penalty kick for her ninth goal of the season. The tally came with 4:47 left in the first half.
DUKE ADDS ON
The Blue Devils added to their advantage at the 64:41 mark of the game. Senior Devon Lynch initiated the play with a corner kick. The ball struck off redshirt junior Elle Piper, and Mia Oliaro drove home the loose ball for her second goal of the campaign.
VANDERBOSCH, 'CUSE DEFENSE WEATHER OFFENSIVE ASSAULT
Syracuse faced 32 Duke shots in the contest, including 21 in the first half. The Blue Devils put 12 on goal in the match. Vanderbosch, who entered the match ranked first in save average and second in save total among ACC goalkeepers, totaled double-digit saves for the fourth time this season.
Graduate student Cierra Collins played a season-high 30 minutes off the bench and made a key defensive save in the first half that kept the game scoreless at the time.
ORANGE RAMP UP ATTACK AFTER THE BREAK
Syracuse tallied six shots, and five of them came following the intermission. Just prior to Duke's second goal, senior Mia Klammer made a long run down the right side and threatened, but she bumped with a Duke defender and her attempt went wide.
One of the best opportunities came from freshman Julia Arbelaez, who secured a long throw-in from Klammer, turned to her right and then fired toward the opposite corner of the Duke net. Blue Devil goalkeeper Caroline Dysart extended to make the stop with 14:27 left.
