Van Kempen Named Regional Player of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the second time since 2010, a Syracuse University field hockey player has been named NFHCA Regional Player of the Year as Bo van Kempen was named Thursday morning.
Van Kempen joins former Syracuse standout Lauren Hahnefeldt as a Mideast Regional Player of the Year. Hahnefeldt won the honor in 2012.
Now a two-time NFHCA Mideast All-Region First Team selection, van Kempen played and started in all 20 games for the Orange this season and was was one of the nation's most elite goal scorers, striking 23 times and ranking fifth in Division I with a 1.15 goals per game average. She was also tied nationally with 2.65 points per game thanks to an additional seven assists. Her 53 points were the fourth-most by any player in the country this year. Van Kempen scored four goals during the postseason, including two against No. 4 Virginia (Nov. 6) and once each against No. 6 Liberty (Nov. 14) and No. 3 Princeton (Nov. 16). The Zevenaar, Netherlands native scored five times on six penalty stroke attempts.
Beth Yeager (Princeton) was the Mid-Atlantic Regional Player of the Year, Bronte-May Brough (Harvard) represented the Northeast Region, with Ryleigh Heck (North Carolina) and Maddie Zimmer (Northwestern) selected from the South and West Regions, respectively. Each of the five Regional Players of the Year are now eligible to be the National Player of the Year.
The NFHCA will announce its Division I All-America teams on December 16, followed by the National Player of the Year announcement on December 18.
