Syracuse (11-13, 5-8 ACC) will play its second ACC game in Florida this season Tuesday, as the Orange take on Miami (5-18, 1-11 ACC) at the Watsco Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the contest will air live on ACC Network.
Setting The Stage
The Orange held on to defeat Boston College in triple overtime Saturday, 95-86, at the JMA Wireless Dome. Syracuse rallied from seven points down in the second overtime period to force a third, where they outscored the Eagles, 10-1. J.J. Starling led five Orange players in double figures with 28 points, with Eddie Lampkin Jr. recording his ninth double-double of the campaign behind 14 points and 18 boards. This will be Syracuse's second game in the Sunshine State this season, as the Orange were defeated at Florida State on Jan. 4, 90-74.
The Hurricanes picked up their first ACC win of the season on Feb. 1, defeating Notre Dame at the Watsco Center, 63-57. However, Miami dropped an 88-78 decision at Louisville on Saturday despite 22 points from A.J. Staton-McCray and 21 by Matthew Cleveland. All five of Miami's wins this season have come at home.
Bill Courtney is serving as the interim head coach for the Hurricanes after Jim Larranaga stepped down on Dec. 26, 2024. Courtney has been on Miami's staff for the last six seasons as an assistant coach and associate head coach. Courtney was on the staff of Miami's Final Four team a season ago.
The Syracuse-Miami Series
Syracuse holds a 21-12 advantage in the all-time series versus the Hurricanes. The Orange won the only meeting between the teams last season, defeating Miami 72-69 at the Dome. However, Miami won the last time the teams squared off in Coral Gables in 2023, 82-78.
Prior to Syracuse's victory over the Hurricanes last season, Miami had won three straight meetings against the Orange. Syracuse holds a 10-9 edge in games between the teams played at Miami.
Starling Starring
Starling was pivotal in Syracuse's triple overtime victory against Boston College, scoring a team-high 28 points with 24 of those coming after halftime. It was his fifth time this season scoring 25 or more points in a game.
Starling surpassed 1,000 career points in Syracuse's victory at California earlier this month. The junior guard entered the night with 990 points and hit the 1,000 mark with a floater at the 15:09 mark of the second half. He finished that contest with 18 points. It took Starling 75 career games to reach the 1,000-point threshold, with the last 47 of those appearances coming with Syracuse after spending his freshman campaign at Notre Dame.
After missing seven games earlier this season due to injury, Syracuse's leading scorer has recorded double figures in nine of his 11 appearances since rejoining the lineup. He is averaging 17.3 points per contest over that span.
Starling is averaging a team-best 18.2 points per outing on the campaign. His 38 points from the Orange's double-overtime victory against Youngstown State were a career high and the second most by any ACC player in a game this season.
Lampkin Climbs The Ladder
Against Pittsburgh on Jan. 25, Lampkin Jr. became the first Syracuse player to tally 23 rebounds in a game since Derrick Coleman did so against Villanova on March 10, 1990, at the Big East Tournament. Only two Syracuse players have grabbed more rebounds in a single game than Lampkin Jr. – Frank Reddout with 34 versus Temple on Feb. 9, 1952, and Dave Bing with 25 against Cornell on Feb. 8, 1966.
Lampkin's 23-rebound performance is one of the top 10 efforts on the glass in Syracuse history. Additionally, his 15 defensive rebounds versus the Panthers were the sixth most in a single game in Orange history, with the all-time Syracuse record sitting at 16. The 23 rebounds were also the most by any ACC player in a game since Armando Bacot also had 23 for North Carolina against James Madison on Nov. 20, 2022.
Against Duke last week, Lampkin Jr. hit another career milestone, as he became the second Syracuse player in as many games to surpass 1,000 career points, joining Starling. Lampkin Jr. reached the mark with a layup at the 2:05 mark of the first half. After spending the first four seasons of his career at TCU and Colorado, where he totaled the first 776 points of his career, he has notched 225 this season with the Orange. Lampkin Jr. reached 1,000 points in his 127th career appearance, the last 23 of which have come with Syracuse.
Lampkin Jr. is averaging 10.6 rebounds over the past 13 contests and has posted a double-double in six of the last 10 outings, which included Saturday against Boston College, as he posted 14 points and 18 rebounds. For the season, Lampkin Jr. is averaging 10.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
Depth Scoring
In Saturday's triple overtime triumph over Boston College, five Syracuse players scored in double figures. After Starling's 28 points, the next highest tally by an Orange player was 16 by Jyare Davis. He reached the mark on a 6-of-10 effort from the field. Davis has scored double-digit points nine times this season, including in each of the last two contests.
After Lampkin's 14 points, Bell was next for the Orange with 12 off the bench. He went 5-of-6 from the free throw line while also matching a season high with six boards. Elijah Moore was the final Syracuse player to score in double figures, as he led the Orange with 11 in the first half. He went 3-of-3 from beyond-the-arc on his way to his first double-digit scoring against an ACC opponent.
Crashing The Glass
As a team, Syracuse grabs 38.1 rebounds per contest, the fourth most in the ACC. The Orange boast a plus-3.3 margin on the season and have recorded double-digit offensive boards 15 times on the campaign, which included 17 offensive boards against Boston College on Saturday.
Three different Syracuse players have pulled down 10 or more rebounds in a game this season – Lampkin Jr. (12 times), Donnie Freeman (seven times) and Davis (one time). Lampkin is third in the conference in rebounding (9.3 per game) and has double-digit boards in 10 of the last 13 outings.
Scouting Miami
Cleveland is Miami's leading scorer on the season, averaging 16.1 points per contest. He is tied with Austin Swartz for the most made 3-pointer on the team (25) and is 82-of-106 at the free throw line on the season (77-percent). Nijel Pack, Miami's second leading scorer with 13.9 points per game, has been out of the lineup due to injury for the last 14 games.
Lynn Kidd is also averaging double figures with 11.0 points per contest and leads the Hurricanes with 6.8 rebounds per game. Brandon Johnson is pacing Miami with 41 assists, 24 steals and 16 blocks on the season.
As a team, Miami ranks No. 9 in the ACC in scoring offense (75.0 points per game) but is last in the conference in scoring defense, allowing 80.0 points per contest. The Hurricanes are also No. 5 in the ACC in field goal percentage (47-percent)
