
Syracuse Dominates Mercyhurst in Regular Season Finale

ERIE, PA. - Syracuse University women's ice hockey defeated Mercyhurst in a 4-2 conclusion on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center, finishing their regular season with a valiant effort.
Syracuse (13-21-0, 11-9-0 AHA) took the lead early with a power-play goal from Celia Wiegand, assisted by Jessica Cheung and Peyton Armstrong. Heidi Knoll then netted a goal from Jackson Kinsler and Rylee McLeod, putting the Orange ahead 2-1, in the third period. Later in the frame, Maya D'Arcy scored with assists from Sami Gendron and McLeod. With just 24 seconds remaining, Tatum White secured the game with an empty-net goal to make it 4-1.Goalkeeper Allie Kelley had a stellar performance, stopping 40 shots and maintaining a .95 save percentage across 60 minutes of play.
Mercyhurst (18-14-2, 13-6-1 AHA) knotted the game on a goal from Vanessa Upson with an assist from Julia Schalin and Mary Sweetapple. In the third period, Kylee Mahoney added another goal, with help from Schalin and Sydney Pedersen. Between the pipes, Jorden Mattison turned away 20 shots.

How it Happened
- Wiegand wasted no time lighting the lamp for the Orange 6:03 into the opening period. She received a crisp pass from Cheung and Armstrong in the offensive zone, and ripped a shot past the goaltender.
- Mercyhurst responded late in the first period at the 18:30 mark, when Upson found the twine with help from Schalin and Mary Sweetapple, knotting the game 1-1.
- The second period turned into a defensive stalemate, with both teams unable to break through. Despite several attempts on net, both goaltenders and defensemen stood firm.
- Syracuse's Kinsler and McLeod worked the puck low before threading a pass to Knoll, who finished the play on the go-ahead goal to make it 2-1.
- D'Arcy hammered a shot past the goalie at the 7:45 mark of the third period finishing off a slick pass sequence from Gendron and McLeod, extending the lead to 3-1.
- The Lakers pushed back with a flurry of shots before Mahoney found the net at the 18:49 mark in the third, finishing a setup from Schalin and Pedersen to cut the deficit to 3-2 and keep Mercyhurst's hopes alive.
- With the Lakers pulling their netminder for the extra attacker in the final minute, White took advantage, corralling a loose puck and sending it about 170 feet into the empty net to cap a dominant 4-1 victory.
- White tallied her seventh goal of the season, while D'Arcy and Knoll recorded their third. Wiegand picked up her second goal of the year.
- The Orange out-blocked Mercyhurst 12-8. Cheung and Gendron each led the way with three blocks.
- The Orange penalty kill stood strong, denying the Lakers on both of their power play opportunities (0-for-2).
- For the seventh time this season, Syracuse saw four or more players score in a single game, highlighting the team's balanced offensive depth.
