
Orange Down Le Moyne, UNCW on Opening Day

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Syracuse (2-0) opened its season with a dominant start, sweeping its opening-day slate at the UNCW Tournament at Boseman Field. The Orange kicked off the day with a 3-1 victory over Le Moyne (0-1) before carrying that momentum into game two, defeating UNCW (0-1) 5-1.

Angie Ramos led the way at the plate, finishing the day a combined 4-for-5 with a run and a walk. Jadyn Burney also had a strong performance, going 3-for-6 with three runs, three stolen bases, and an RBI.

Laila Morales-Alves and Peyton Schemmer paced the Orange in RBIs, driving in three and two runs, respectively. Each delivered the game-winning RBI in their respective matchups.

On the mound, Julianna Verni and Madison Knight earned the starts for the Orange, each securing their first win of the season. Rose Cano also made an impact, tossing two perfect innings to notch a save against Le Moyne.
In her start against the Seahawks, Knight tossed a career performance, matching a personal-best 10 strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST LE MOYNE:
Syracuse struck first in the bottom of the opening inning as Morales-Alves delivered a sacrifice fly to score Burney. The Orange catcher added to the lead in the third, ripping a double down the right field line to bring home Burney for the second time along with Kelly Breen, making it a 3-0 game.

Le Moyne recorded its first run of the season in the top of the fifth, as Alyssa Dybacz singled to right field, driving in Gabriella Zarcone.

After Le Moyne's run, Cano entered the game, keeping the Dolphins off the board for the rest of the contest, securing the Orange's 3-1 victory.

Verni earned the win, pitching five strong innings and recording five strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST UNCW:
UNCW struck first as Maggie Pertee drove in Arial Pearce with an RBI single, giving the Seahawks a 1-0 lead.

The Orange responded immediately with a three-run top of the fourth. Knight led off with a single to left, followed by an Ramos single to the right side. Pinch-hitter Gabby Lantier used her speed to reach on an infield hit, loading the bases. Schemmer then delivered a two-RBI single to give Syracuse the lead, and Burney added to the advantage with an RBI single.

Syracuse added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, beginning with a Madelyn Lopez RBI double that scored Schemmer. Breen followed with a single to center, bringing home Burney for the Orange's fifth run of the game.

Knight and the Orange preserved their four-run lead in the bottom of the final frame, sealing the victory with the starting pitcher's 10th strikeout of the game. Syracuse secured its second win of opening day with a 5-1 victory over host school UNCW.

The Orange continue play at the UNCW Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 8 with a pair of games against Queens (N.C.) and UNCW at 12:30 and 5:30 p.m. The contest against the Seahawks will be streamed live on FloSports.

- Knight matched her career-high strikeout total with 10 in the win over UNCW. She was the last Orange pitcher to reach that mark, also striking out 10 in a win over Lafayette on April 23, 2023.
- Morales-Alves drove in all three runs in the win over the Dolphins, marking her 16th career multi-RBI game and third with three RBIs.
- Schemmer drove in two runs against UNCW, marking the second multi-RBI game of her career.
- Â Verni earned her first win of the season, tossing five innings and securing five strikeouts against the Dolphins.
- Cano recorded her first save for Syracuse with two innings in the circle to seal the Orange win over the Dolphins.
- Lauren Fox earned her first collegiate start in her first career game at the college level, playing second base and batting ninth in the win against Le Moyne.
- Ramos had a strong season opener at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk and two stolen bases. She finished the day 4-for-5.
- Â Burney made a pair of starts at shortstop for the Orange in her first pair of games as a member of the Orange. She totaled three hits at the plate with three runs and three stolen bases.
- Sofia Taliaferro made her first collegiate appearance, recording a stolen base in a pinch runner role.
- Lopez recorded the 19th multi-hit performance of her career, going 2-for-2 against the Seahawks.
- As a team, the Orange tallied 17 hits, eight RBI, eight runs, seven walks, and seven stolen bases on the day
- Syracuse has won seven season openers across the last 10 seasons and have now won back-to-back game ones after its win over Le Moyne.
- The Orange move to 5-0 all-time against Le Moyne. The two teams will continue their series on Sunday at 10 a.m.
- 'Cuse also earned the first win in the lifetime series against the Seahawks with the programs set to rematch tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m.
