Orange Sweeps Awards for Second Time
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For a second time in the last three weeks, Syracuse University men's lacrosse has swept the ACC Men's Lacrosse weekly honors as junior attackman Joey Spallina and sophomore faceoff man John Mullen picked up plaudits. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) announced its weekly winners Tuesday afternoon.
Joey Spallina was selected as the ACC Offensive Player of the Week for a second time this season while John Mullen earned his first ACC Defensive Player of the Week selection of the season.
Spallina had a record-setting week as he became one of the newest members of the Syracuse 200-point club. He is tied for the second-fastest Orange to the mark, surpassing the milestone on the exact play as linemate Owen Hiltz, who scored on a Spallina assist in the first quarter of Syracuse's 16-12 win over No. 20 Colgate. Spallina completed the week with 17 points behind seven goals and 10 assists, including an 11-point effort against Colgate on Saturday. His 11 points (5g, 6a) are tied for the fourth-most point by a Syracuse player in a single game and the first to finish with 11 points since Paul Gait did so against Navy during the 1988 NCAA Tournament. Spallina shot 50 percent overall on the week, canning seven of his 14 shots, including a 62.5 percent against the Raiders.
Mullen had an equally impressive week as a faceoff man. The Norwell, Massachusetts native won 32 of his 44 faceoffs this week, a 72.7 winning percentage across two games. In Tuesday's nonconference tilt against Manhattan, Mullen was near perfect, winning 14 of his 15 chances with nine ground balls. On Saturday, Mullen snagged another dozen ground balls while winning 18 of his 29 draws. He added an assist just five seconds into the Colgate game as the Orange led quite literally wire-to-wire. He assisted the 199th point for Hiltz, setting up the attackmen connection with Spallina for 200 points on the next Syracuse goal. Mullen notched an unofficial "hockey" assist later as Spallina received a behind-the-back-directly-from-the-ground ball Mullen pass before hitting Trey Deere on the crease for the goal.
The Orange, who moved up to eighth in both the USILA Coaches Poll and Inside Lacrosse Media Poll this week, hit the road for their ACC opener on Saturday. Opening faceoff at the University of Virginia is set for 1 p.m. with ACC Network Extra covering the game at Klöckner Stadium.
