LOS ANGELES – Syracuse University men's lacrosse assistant coach and defensive coordinator John Odierna was named as an assistant coach for the Boston Cannons this summer. The Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) announced Odierna's appointment on Wednesday morning.
Over the last two seasons with the Orange, Odierna has helped revitalize the Syracuse defense. Across the 27 games played in 2024 and 2025, the Orange defense allows just 10.00 goals per game, including just 8.20 per game this year, tied for the fourth-best scoring defense in Division I and second in the ACC.
In each of the last two seasons to date, the Orange have held opponents to single digits in 12 of the 28 games. This season, Syracuse has held five of its 10 opponents to five goals or fewer, including just two goals allowed against Manhattan. Across the 10 games played in 2025, Odierna's defense has held opponents scoreless for at least 15 minutes eight times, including three games with scoring droughts of at least 20 minutes.
Odierna joins a Boston Cannons staff, helmed by Brian Holman, that had the second-best scores against average in the entire PLL at 11.5 per game, only half a score behind the league leader Carolina Chaos. Alec Jernstedt was also announced as an assistant coach for the Cannons.
The Cannons went 7-3 during the 2024 regular season, tied with the New York Atlas for the best record in the PLL. Boston won the PLL's Championship Series for a second-straight year this February.
No. 7 Syracuse continues ACC play this weekend as the Orange take on No. 5 Notre Dame at the JMA Wireless Dome. Game time is set for 2 p.m. on ACC Network with Anish Shroff '04 and Paul Carcaterra '97 on the call.
Tickets for Saturday's battle at the Dome are available at Cuse.com/Tickets or by calling the Dome box office at 1-888-DOME-TIX (1-888-3663-849).
