Orange Improve to 5-0

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University Volleyball team improved to 5-0 on the season with a sweep of Canisius (25-22, 25-21, 25-7) on Friday afternoon at the UAlbany Invitational. Canisius moves to 1-3 on the young season. The Orange look to close out the weekend with a clean sheet on Saturday, Sept. 6, when they face off against Cornell at 11 a.m. in Albany.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse led the opening set early at 13-9 but the Golden Griffins rolled to tie the set at 13-all. 'Cuse responded with three straight points and the Griffs were unable to close the gap. Gabriella McLaughlin and Skylar George led SU with five kills apiece in the opening set while Tehya Maeva had 13 of Syracuse's 15 assists.
The two teams exchanged blows early on in the second set but after the Orange capitalized on three-straight service errors by the Golden Griffins, the Orange took the lead 8-7 and never looked back. Despite having its lowest offensive performance of the match in the second set hitting a .179 clip, the Orange were successful on the defensive end with 10 blocks and 15 digs, nine of which belonged to George,
Syracuse jumped to a quick 6-0 lead in the third set. After the Orange stretched their lead to 10-1, the Griffs called for a timeout. SU continued to pour on the offense with a 8-1 run to lead 18-3. The final set saw the Orange put up a .467 hitting percentage with 16 kills on 30 attempts with just two errors. The Orange had 10 blocks and 15 digs and were led offensively by George and Zharia Harris-Waddy who had four and three kills, respectively.
Syracuse extends its win streak to five games and 18 straight non-conference wins, dating back to the 2023 season.

- Soana Lea'ea was consistent in the middle with five kills on six attacts for the best hitting percentage on the team at .833
