Madden Scores Game-Winner for Another Top 20 Win
COLUMBUS, Ohio – It took 75 minutes but eventually, Syracuse University field hockey got its game-winning goal from Hattie Madden as the No. 11 Orange took down No. 13 Ohio State in Columbus 2-1 in double overtime.
Hattie Madden received the ball on a perfect aerial pass from Bo van Kempen, who dropped the ball down to Madden at the top of the circle edge. How it Happened
- The teams battled through the first quarter 0-0 with just one shot from Syracuse midfielder Lieke Leeggangers in the 5th minute. The Orange backline held Ohio State without a shot through the first half of the game.
- In the 20th minute, van Kempen had a penalty corner shot blocked down but earned a second corner for the Orange.
- Syracuse kept the pressure on in the 21st minute once from Hattie Madden followed by a corner chance from van Kempen. Stevens stopped the first shot while Madeline Bogle from Ohio State stopped van Kempen's chance.
- Turner wasted little time in the second half to find the back of the net. Inside the first minute of the restart, she dribbled through the core of the Buckeye defense relatively untouched and flicked the ball past Stevens for a 1-0 lead.
- Syracuse's defensive penalty unit was busy in the third quarter as the Buckeyes earned six corner chances. In the 42nd minute, Ohio State broke through on Fitchner's goal from Webster and Hudson.
- Neither team could find the goal in the fourth quarter on an even three shots from each side. In the first overtime period, Ohio State put one shot on goal but King was equal to the task and forced the second overtime.
- The Buckeyes kept the pressure on early in the second overtime with three shots on goal, all turned away by King.
- Standing near midfield in the 75th minute, van Kempen flicked a ball high and over the heads of the Buckeye defense, corralled perfectly by Hattie Madden to set up the chip-in game-winning goal.
- Syracuse continues its road swing with another pair next weekend.
- The Orange head for Central New Jersey on Friday for another top-20 showdown at No. 10 Princeton (1-1).
- Game time at Bedford Field is slated for 5 p.m.
- On Sunday, Syracuse heads for the Lehigh Valley for a 1 p.m. game at Lafayette.
