BALTIMORE, Md. - The Syracuse softball team is set to play at the UMBC Tournament from Friday, March 6 through Sunday, March 8.
The Orange will start the weekend off against Albany at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 6 followed by a 4 p.m. matchup against UMBC. On Saturday, March 7, the team will compete again against Albany at 12:30 p.m. and UMBC at 5:30 p.m. 'Cuse will round out the weekend by taking on Morgan State at 10 a.m. on March 8.
ORANGE UPDATE:Â
Syracuse went 3-1 at the Terrapin Invitational, with wins against Fairfield, UMBC and Providence and a loss to Maryland. Kaylee Eubanks had her first career home run against Fairfield on Friday and Rose Cano recorded her first home run of the season on Saturday against Maryland. In the team's matchup with UMBC, Jadyn Burney hit her first career home run, which was a grand slam. She is the first Orange player to hit a grand slam since Taylor Posner did against Boston College on April 26, 2025. Burney went on to have multiple hit games and recorded her first career triple against Providence. Madison Knight also recorded her fifth home run of the season after striking out Providence for the final out in a game on Sunday.  Gabby Lanier hit her first career triple in the top of the seventh inning against the Friars, helping SU secure the win.
In the circle, Julianna Verni threw 10 strikeouts against Fairfield on the first day and recorded four strikeouts. She then stepped in to relieve Knight against Toledo on day two. Jackie Pengal threw all five innings against UMBC on Saturday and recorded five strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
This weekend will mark the sixth and seventh meeting of Syracuse and UAlbany since the Orange took home double-header wins in 2025. The teams finished the 2025 season with a 20-26 record and third in the America East Conference. Their 2026 record is currently 3-6 after securing two back-to-back wins in the Make It Happen Games against Bowling Green and Bellarmine.
The Orange will face off against UMBC for the second and third time on Friday and Saturday afternoon. Syracuse previously faced the Retrievers last weekend at the Terrapin Invitational, winning 11-1 in five innings. The Retrievers finished second in the America East Conference last season with a 20-29 record. UMBC welcomes a new coach, Angie Nicholson, who comes from Norfolk State. The team heads into the matchup trailing the series 0-1 and have a 3-6 season record and a one-game losing streak after falling to Maryland at the Terrapin Invitational.
Sunday will be the fourth meeting between 'Cuse and Morgan State. The Orange won their last meeting in 2025, 15-2. Morgan State finished last season fourth in the MEAC with a 18-29 record. They started this season with a new head coach, Melissa Shock, from Barton College. The Bears are currently 0-10 to start the 2026 season.
