WASHINGTON, D.C. – With the postseason on the horizon, Syracuse University senior men's lacrosse player Joey Spallina was named as one of the 25 Tewaaraton Award Nominees. The Tewaaraton Foundation announced its Nominees Saturday afternoon.
Spallina, now a three-time Tewaaraton Nominee, is among the top players in the country, ranking fifth in Division I with 2.69 assists per game and 4.62 points per game, which is in the top 15 nationally. In those two categories, he ranks second and third in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), respectively.
The Mount Sinai, New York native leads NCAA Division I active players in career points per game (4.71), total points (306), assists per game (2.66) and total assists (173). He is currently second among active players with 65 career games played and is seventh in total goals (133). Spallina, who was drafted third overall in this year's PLL College Draft by the Maryland Whipsnakes, is the only active Division I player over 300 points as he closes in on the Syracuse all-time points record (307 - Mike Powell). His 306 points are 27 all-time in NCAA Division I History as well.
Spallina is one of nine ACC players on the Tewaaraton Award Nominee list, four more than the next-closest conference (Ivy League).
The No. 5 Orange are set to take on Colgate this afternoon with a 5 p.m. start time in the JMA Wireless Dome. Today's game will air on ACC Network with Cooper Boardman and Jules Heningburg on the call.
