Volleyball Falls in Season Opener

The Syracuse Volleyball team opened its 2026 season on the road Saturday afternoon, taking on Cincinnati in a neutral-site match at Huff Hall in Champaign, Ill. The Bearcats defeated the Orange 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-11) to move to 2-0, while Syracuse falls to 0-1.
Kiernan Stamey and Marie Laurio each paced the Orange offense with 13 kills apiece. Stamey hit .233 on 30 swings, while Laurio hit .286 on 28 attempts. Setter Charis Burge dished out 25 assists on the night. Yuka Urano led the Orange defensively with six digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set one went back-and-forth, with 11 ties and three lead changes. Syracuse took the lead, 21-20, on a Urano ace, but Cincinnati answered down the stretch, winning the set 27-25.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the second set, with Syracuse and Cincinnati knotted up four times throughout the set. With the score 18-15 in favor of Cincinnati, the Orange were able to rally off three-straight point to tie the set, 18-18, before the Bearcats pulled away, taking the set 25-19.
In the third set, Laurio, Stamey and Emma Faerber all found kills early in the set to help keep the Orange within range, but with the score at 19-11, the Bearcats rallied six-straight points to take the set, 25-11

Syracuse stays in Champaign to close out the weekend, taking on Illinois on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET at Huff Hall. The match will stream on B1G+.
