Syracuse led by as many as 14 points in the opening half but St. Francis narrowed the gap to five at 56-51 with 8:20 remaining. Syracuse answered by scoring 17 of the game’s last 19 points. Damone Brown had seven points during the run, including back-to-back dunks in the final 40 seconds. Allen Griffin contributed all seven points of his points in the closing nine minutes.
Brown finished the game with 17 point, nine rebounds and four assists. Preston Shumpert led the team with 23 points, a performance that included 11-of-16 shooting from the floor. In his first career start, center Billy Celuck tallied a personal-high 14 boards plus nine points and three assists.
Syracuse held St. Francis to 29.7 percent shooting from the field (19-64) and forced 19 Terrier turnovers.
Coach Jim Boeheim’s record in season beginners improved to 23-2. He utilized 14 of 16 players in the triumph.
