Player and Jake Crouthamel Quotes
Julie McBride • Junior • Guard
On Coach Freeman’s decision to resign as head women’s basketball coach at Syracuse University:
"She’s a great person and whatever she does in life, she will always succeed. I just know that Coach Freeman put her heart into making us better people and I will always be grateful for that. She’s taught me many lessons in life as well as basketball. We had a tough year this year. It was disappointing we lost games and Coach did all she could to help us win. I have a lot of mixed emotions, but I am supporting her decision. If she thinks it is in her best interest to leave this program, then I will support her and believe also that it is in her best interest to leave this program. I may not agree, but I’m going to support her because I care about her and I know that the rest of the team will support her. We’ll miss her, but at the same time, she’s going to move on and we’re going to move on."
McBride on the future coaching staff:
"I hope that the assistant coaches stay, just so we know some people, so it’s not brand new. But, that’s not up to me or any of us. That’s up to the people who make the decision. They talked to us and they’re definitely open to what our opinions are and how we feel. I’m sure there are people on this team that will express that, and we should, because it’s our program as well."
Director of Athletics Jake Crouthamel
"For Marianna to stand up in front of cameras and the print media and bare her soul the way she did, that’s just the kind of person she is. I would doubt any of you have ever heard anything like you heard today. How could anyone have said it any better than she said it? She is one of the finest human beings I have ever been associated with. Her values are right on target. We need more people like that. I hired her 10 years ago for all the right reasons and they are still the right reasons. There wasn’t anyone pulling for her more than I was."
"Marianna did things that the public is not aware of because she felt so strongly about people. Her care for people was greater than the need to win."
On hiring a new women’s basketball coach:
"We’re conducting a national search. From a support standpoint, they’re not going to find a whole lot of better situations. The opportunity to succeed is here. Because of that, I think this is an attractive job."
