Manny Shemin Resource Room<br>Career Services for Student-Athletes
SU Student Employment / GRE Review / Syracuse Orange Athlete Resume (SOAR)
Junior Career Timeline / Senior Career Timeline
The Manny Shemin Resource Room is dedicated to assisting student-athletes with all aspects of their career and post-graduate needs. The Manny Shemin Resource Room is located in 105F of the Stevenson Educational Center. Syracuse University has excelled in academics and athletics and our student-athletes are individuals who have proven success in both.
The demands of being both a student and an athlete sometimes leave little time for getting job experience. What the athlete needs to realize is that participation in Division-I athletics is very similar to holding a job. Athletes learn skills that can be transferred to any job situation. It is in the nature of athletics to impart the following qualities on participants. These personal strengths are desirable in virtually all jobs, regardless of the field.
Time Management
Teamwork
Goal-Oriented
Competitiveness
Confidence
Persistence/Endurance
Loyalty
Discipline
Taking Criticism
Dealing with Setbacks
Leadership
Flexibility/Adaptability
For any student-athlete needing assistance with marketing their skills, the career development staff is available to help with self-assessment, resumes, cover letters, interviewing, and job search planning. A few of the services currently being offered through the Manny Shemin Resource Room include:
INDIVIDUAL APPOINTMENTS
Imagine individual attention devoted solely to you and your questions about careers, internships, graduate or professional school, or making the transition from student to professional. Student-athletes may receive help to clarify goals, explore personal concerns, and develop an individualized career plan.
CAREER ASSESSMENT
The following tests can help you generate career options based on your interests, skills, values, and personality traits. An individual appointment with a career advisor is required for interpretation to add clarity to your test results. These tests measure interests, confidence in skills, confidence in abilities, values, and personality types in relation to career choices:
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Strong Interest Inventory, Campbell Interest & Skill Survey, Self-Directed Search, or CHOICES a computerized guidance and information system.
COMPUTER PROGRAMS
The Manny Shemin Resource Room provides student-athletes with a comprehensive career development computer program called CHOICES which is available to use during office hours. Resources also include access to Career Search, a web-based database of over 1.7 million companies across hundreds of industry categories with over 7.5 million contact names. Users can research companies by location, keyword, and industry category and save results in the most popular word processing and spreadsheet formats. Internship Search is a program similar to Career Search that students may use to research internship opportunities. Student-athletes may access CHOICES, Career Search and the Internship Database via the internet from any computer on campus after meeting with a career counselor.
CAREER INFORMATION RESOURCES
The following resources are available in the Manny Shemin Resource Room:
- Career literature, such as published books providing insights into occupational description, training availability, experience required salaries, outlook and trends.
