Greg Robinson Quotes
Head Coach Greg Robinson on going for fourth down early in the game:
“17-0. I think it was third and two feet and fourth and a foot. I said to myself that somewhere we have to make a stand. We have to make a stand. The offense needed to make that play for the football team. Unfortunately, they didn’t. I felt bad for the defensive kids because they had to go out there and go against a heavy-run formation, and all of the sudden they do a good job of play action passing on it in short yardage situations. I don’t see it as a bad decision. I don’t see that. I felt it was time to make something happen. We didn’t.”
Robinson on ball security:
“It behooves me. It came in every shape and size. When it rains, it pours. We worked very hard on that all through spring and camp. Maybe our emphasis hasn’t been strong enough lately. It started at Florida State, really, with the two kickoff returns. How many times was the ball on the ground? (Nine). Nine times. That’s ridiculous. That’s bad coaching, it really is. I really can’t tell you anything other than that. Disappointing? Heck yeah.”
Robinson on the blocked punt:
“That really is a disappointment because they have been so good and everybody has come after us. Florida State is one of the best punt blocking teams and they tried but couldn’t get it. I have to see what really happened. I heard what they thought but I don’t want to make a statement until I see it. We’ve been darn good there. That’s too bad. Darn touchdown.”
Robinson on the field goal attempts when down big late in the game:
“I want Barker to kick. On the third-and-12, we tried to throw a ball for a touchdown. We didn’t hit it. Kick it. I’d rather see him kick then and find out what he can do right now. Maybe that’s the wrong strategy, but strategy was a little bit gone by that time. Get points up there. Let’s score. That’s the way I felt. I don’t know if that’s right or wrong. I really don’t.”
Robinson on the offensive performance:
“Not good. The thing that I think, is that I question myself. To try and get two quarterbacks ready, I’m being upfront. Maybe it was too early to tell you that. You try to get two quarterbacks ready that have two different styles, it’s tough because you’re basically trying to run two different offenses. Quite frankly, I think that was part of it. I really do. That’s my feeling on it. It doesn’t make it right but I’m being right upfront with you. And it is not an excuse. I look at it and it’s difficult.”
Robinson on evaluating the team midseason:
“I mean this. I used to say this in the NFL. I’m not good at evaluating midseason where we are. Sometimes in a bye in the NFL you can assess. It’s hard. I’m working everyday to get the details down and to really be able to assess, you need hours and hours to do it. I’m not happy. Am I pleased? No. Some of it is this: it’s handling the football. It’s dropping passes. We had first-and-10 and we complete a ball and make a first down and we throw another one but we drop the ball. You have to catch the ball. That’s football. Some of it players, coaches. It’s everything. Accountability goes to the whole thing. Where it’s at? I don’t know. I know it’s not good enough.”
Robinson on if his head is spinning at 1-5:
“Yeah, it is. A little bit it is. I didn’t imagine this would happen today, but it did. I have to deal with it. The only statement that I made to that football team is that I’m going to do everything I possibly can to find a way to help this football team get a win next week. That’s the best I can do. I’m going to really do my best to figure out what we can do to get this thing right. You just have to keep working at it. I know you don’t want to hear that.”
Robinson on if he was happy with the defense:
“I felt the defense played like our defense. Last week, they played hard. If you watch the film on them, they’re running around. The collisions and the hitting, I didn’t feel it. But, I felt it today. I felt it right there at the bitter end.”
Robinson on if the team is moving backwards:
“I don’t know that. It looks like it, but I don’t know if that’s part of the deal. I don’t know that. It’s not looking good right now. I can tell you that. We have to get the offense rolling. We have to. Defense is fighting to hold their own. And to keep pulling like that, the other side has to turn the corner. That’s the bottom line.”
Robinson on the playing time of Nick Chestnut and Bruce Williams:
“As far as getting balls, we called a go route for Bruce, but I think he was covered. They don’t just automatically say that this play is for you, Bruce, you go. He’s in. he played. He plays a whole lot more. He has to create some of that, too. There is no magic wand that just because Bruce is playing that he is up and down the field. He has to do it. He has to get open and do things. I don’t know what he did. I really don’t. I remember the one play because I saw it.”
Robinson on the kick return game:
“They did a very good job.”
Robinson on getting more involved with the offense:
“All I’m going to say is that I’m going to do whatever I can to help this football team win. Whatever that is, I don’t know. For me to say right now, I’m not going to make that statement.”
