Brown set the SU record for highest rush average in a season(6.2) in 1956 and for the most rushing touchdowns (6) and most points scored in a game (43) vs. Colgate in 1956. After leaving Syracuse, he played in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns from 1957 to 1965, where he scored 106 touchdowns. He was inducted into the Pro Hall of Fame in 1971 and the College Hall of Fame in 1995.
Senior Year (1956): Unanimous All-America selection … Finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting … Carried the ball 158 times for 986 yards and 13 touchdowns … Ranked third nationally in rushing yards per game … Scored a college record 43 points against Colgate by scoring six touchdowns and seven PATs… Rushed for 132 yards on 22 carries at the Cotton Bowl and scored 21 of SU’s 27 points … Caught five passes for 56 yards and one touchdown … Second on the team in interceptions with three … Against TCU in the 1957 Cotton Bowl, rushed for 132 yards on 22 carries and scored 21 of SU’s 27 points, and was named top back in the game.
Junior Year (1955): Rushed for 666 yards on 128 carries … Scored eight touchdowns, including seven rushing and one receiving, and 13 PATs for 55 points … Ran for 129 yards on 10 carries against Boston University … Rushed for 155 yards and three touchdowns the following week against Brown … Caught five passes for 44 yards and one touchdown … Second on the team in interceptions with two.
Sophomore Year (1954): Ran for 439 yards and four touchdowns on 75 carries … Scored four touchdowns and two PATs for 26 points … Scored SU’s lone touchdown in a loss to Cornell … Scored on runs of 41 and 17 yards en route to 101 yards on 15 carries in 31-12 victory against Colgate … Led the team in interceptions with three.
